Gannon Football Falls To No. 23 IUP In Lightning-Wracked Game

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Indiana (Pa.) 43, Gannon 34
  • Records: Gannon (2-6, 2-3 PSAC West) | Indiana (6-2, 3-2 PSAC West)
  • Location: McConnell Family Stadium — Erie, Pa.
  • The Short Story — In a game that finished 6 hours and 27 minutes after it was scheduled to kick off, Gannon built a lead against Indiana, but the guests were able to use a 20-0 run from the final play of the first half until late in the fourth quarter to take control and snap the Golden Knights' winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After waiting over an hour to start the game, both offenses opened with a three-and out. The fireworks of a wild first half opened up from there, in between three more weather delays.
  • Starting deep in its own territory, the next Gannon drive was cut short by an interception, but the Crimson Hawks only managed to move the ball two yards on its ensuing drive, and settled for a field goal to open the scoring.
  • That was the first of five straight scoring drives combined between the two teams, and nine of the final 10 drives of the first half would end in points. Gannon responded, taking its first lead of the game after a big kickoff return from A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius), as Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) capped a short drive with a two-yard burst for the score to make it 7-3 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.
  • IUP used two big pass plays to quickly move down the field and go back ahead, although a missed extra point kept it at 9-7. On the first play of the second quarter, Jones rumbled ahead for 12 yards to put the hosts back in front, but the Crimson Hawks answered again and went up 16-14.
  • The lone drive during the scoring flurry that did not result in points was a stalled three-and-out for the Golden Knights on the next possession, but Aaron Webb (Baltimore, Md./Franklin) came up with a big play, knocking the ball loose on the punt return, and Jacob Yost (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) jumped on it to give it right back to Gannon.
  • Jones ripped off two nice runs with the hosts receiving new life, including blowing over a defender in the hole on his way to a 13-yard touchdown and a 21-16 lead for the Golden Knights.
  • The IUP response was a journey, covering 15 plays and 86 yards, and was bisected by the day's second lightning delay, lasting 35 minutes. A short run capped the drive, and pushed the Hawks back into the lead with 1:31 left in the half.
  • After penalties backed Gannon up to 1st and 30 from its own 24 on the next drive, Jones burst for 20 yards down the right sideline, and drew a late hit call that gave the Knights a second chance. A pass interference penalty got the ball into the red zone, and an excellent effort by Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) to lay out for a pass from Jason Dambach (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) over the middle resulted in an 11-yard score and a 28-23 Gannon lead with less than a minute to go in the half.
  • With an extended delay just minutes earlier, the teams agreed to forgo the traditional intermission and roll into the third quarter, although the guests converted a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter to edge closer.
  • The longest delay of the game came shortly after IUP took the lead in third quarter. The Hawks went up 33-28 thanks to a pair of chunk plays, and after one tote by Jones on the next drive, officials whistled for a stoppage, with this one lasting 75 minutes.
  • The teams barely got back out on the field — Gannon turned the ball over and then came up with a big stop on 4th and 4 from its own 27 with less than 90 seconds of game time coming off the clock — before the third and final lightning delay with 3:36 on the clock in the third.
  • IUP added a touchdown and a field goal while burning up some clock in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead out to 43-28. Gannon called a fake punt on its drive in between, with Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) converting the 4th and 7, but that drive stalled in IUP territory.
  • The Golden Knights tried to mount a comeback late, and a big catch from Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa./Reading) for 13 yards nearly got the score to one possession, but the conversion failed and the hosts' onside kick skipped out of bounds, allowing the Crimson Hawks to milk the rest of the clock.

GAME NOTES
  • The official game time was 2:49, played around 3 hours, 38 minutes of delays from the originally scheduled kickoff. Three delays during the game totaled 2 hours, 20 minutes.
  • Jones finished with 142 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 27 carries. That pushed the senior over 1,000 yards for the season, and was his fourth straight game of at least 130 yards on the ground.
  • Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) caught seven passes for 72 yards and his second-quarter touchdown.
  • Martell Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Licking Heights) led the defense with 11 total tackles, although his interception streak came to an end at three straight games with a pick.
  • The Knights did force two turnovers, with Webb's forced fumble on the punt return joining James Simms (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) picking off a fluttering IUP pass in the third quarter after Noah Harris-Lyles (Atlantic City, N.J./Atlantic City) got to the quarterback.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon gets to stay at home for a second consecutive week, hosting Mercyhurst Saturday in the Battle for the Niagara Cup.
  • The game is set for a noon kickoff at McConnell Family Stadium, and will be a Jimmy John's and Chick-fil-A Promotional Day.
  • Live video, live stats and live audio will be available.
  • Mercyhurst dealt with the same weather in Erie as at Gannon, and was forced to postpone the conclusion of their game until Sunday at noon. The Lakers trail California (Pa.) 6-0 with 2:39 left in the second quarter.
  • The Lakers hold a 14-6-1 advantage in the all-time series, and are the Golden Knights' most-played opponent.
