  • The Short Story: Following a stellar day at the service line, the 23rd-ranked Gannon women's volleyball team cruised to its tenth straight victory with a 3-0 sweep of Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. Gannon recorded 19 service aces on the day, accounting for its highest single-match output since last November.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon came out of the gates determined and opened up a quick 5-0 lead in the first set. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) opened the match with back-to-back aces and Lauren Sampson (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) followed it up with three kills in a row.
  • Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) collected a kill to give Gannon an 8-2 lead in the first set.
  • Gannon used a 4-0 scoring run, capped by an ace from Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), to take a 12-5 lead and force a Slippery Rock timeout.
  • Smith put down three more aces, part of a 5-0 Gannon run, as the Lady Knights extended its first set lead to 18-8.
  • Slippery Rock attempted to climb back into the first set, but Gannon maintained the lead and earned a 25-18 set victory.
  • The second set was more evenly played at the start, with the score tied at 11 about midway through.
  • Gannon used a four-point stretch, highlighted by two aces from Sampson, to take a 15-12 lead the Lady Knights would not relinquish in the set.
  • Slippery Rock rallied to tie the second set at 19, but Gannon countered with the final six points. Kenzie Lasher (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) concluded the set with two aces before an attack error by SRU allowed Gannon to win the second set 25-19.
  • Gannon opened up a 6-4 lead in the third set with kills from Smith and Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha).
  • The Lady Knights took control of the set with a 6-1 run, which included kills from Smith, Sampson and Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran).
  • Gannon continues to hold all the momentum in the match with an 8-1 outburst in the third set for a 23-11 set lead.
  • Aubree Lanman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) provided the final kill of the afternoon to hand Gannon the victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Smith posted a double-double (11 kills, 14 digs) for the third consecutive match.
  • Sampson just missed out on a double-double for Gannon with a game-high 15 kills and nine digs. She added four aces and led the team with 19.0 total points.
  • Seven different players had at least one ace for Gannon.
  • Beyers stuffed the stat sheet for Gannon, with 33 assists, eight digs, five aces and two kills.
  • Gannon hit .344 in the final set while SRU hit just .032 in the set.
  • Kerestes added five kills for Gannon along with an ace and block assist.
