Gannon's Hays Scores Game-Winner in 2OT Upset of West Chester

  • The Short Story: Hannah Hays (Butler, Pa./Butler) netted her second goal of the day in the 103rd minute to lift the Gannon women's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win against West Chester on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Chester scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute when Hannah Grandell fed Linzi Wolfe on the left wing. Wolfe beat her defender and went one-on-one with GU goalie Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) for her second goal of the season.
  • Hays tied things up when she headed in a long cross from Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) in the 69th minute. It was her third goal of the season.
  • Vanessa Coccurello (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) put the Lady Knights up 2-1 with just under five minutes to play in regulation on her second goal of the year. Hays provided the assist.
  • With 0:45 remaining in regulation, West Chester scored on a loose ball inside the box. Shannon Cooley was credited with her first goal of the season, while Dani Cady had the assist on the game-tying goal.
  • Hays scored the thrilling game-winner with 7:34 remaining in the second overtime period. Aesling McCullough (Moon, Pa./Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) fed the ball ahead to Hays, where she buried the ball in the top left corner.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Hays finished with a career-high five points on two goals and one assist.
  • Coccurello scored Gannon's other goal.
  • Lewis and McCullough recorded one assist apiece.
  • Solymosi made four saves in her first career win.
  • Gannon out-shot West Chester, 16-13.
  • Gannon also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. .
