GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon nearly saw itself fall behind in the first minute of the game, but keeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) posted a quick reaction time to stop a shot from West Chester's Nick Jachwak just seconds into the contest.
  • The Golden Rams controlled the early going, netting four shots in the first five minutes, but none were as dangerous as that early chance.
  • Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) recorded the first shot for the Golden Knights, with his chance in the box blocked during a flurry of action that kept the ball in a dangerous position for a good bit.
  • Austin Ludwik (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) got his head on a corner in the 23rd minute, putting a solid shot just over the crossbar, and Knox followed up with a shot that drifted high as well a minute later. The combo of Abdullah Say (Ruesselsheim, Germany) and Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) barely missed connecting on a through ball in the box in the 37th.
  • Knox got the first opportunity of the second half for the Knights, sliding to beat the WCU keeper to a ball, but his touch slid just wide within the first three minutes after the break.
  • Gannon spoiled a number of chances for the Golden Rams through the second half, including a threatening ball the bounced around the box without resulting in a shot in the 63rd, and another shot by the guests' Colin Muller in the 75th that skipped across the box and just wide.
  • Ludwik got his head on the ball again late in the frame, flicking a ball on a restart from Srdjan Dujkovic (Darmstadt, Germany/) with seven minutes left, but that also just barely missed the mark.
  • Jason Pixley proved to be the hero in the 89th minute for West Chester, as Daniel Grindrod lofted a ball into the box from 45 yards out on the left side that was nodded inside the far post by Pixley for the game-winning goal. Gannon applied pressure for the final two minutes, but couldn't break through the packed-in defense of the Rams.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon keeper Hedi Mehnaoui (Paris, France/Lycee Chevrollier) made eight saves on the day, keeping West Chester off the board for 88 minutes despite seeing numerous quality chances.
  • West Chester outshot the Golden Knights 16-10 for the game, but the hosts cut a large advantage in the first half down to just 6-5 in the final 45 minutes.
  • Knox led Gannon with four shots, including the Knights' lone shot on goal of the game when he got his foot around a defender to knock a cross on-goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon remained atop the PSAC standings despite its second straight conference defeat, but it's setting up to be a tight finish, with all of the top five teams within five points, and eight of 12 within eight points.
  • West Chester now leads the all-time series with the Golden Knights, breaking a tie in the tight series and now holding a 5-4-1 advantage.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will make a short crosstown trip to Mercyhurst for a PSAC road matchup on Sunday, October 14.
  • Live stats and live video will be available for the 3:30 p.m. matchup from Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
