Gannon Women’s Soccer Blanks Roberts Wesleyan 3-0, Notches Third Straight Shutout Victory

  • The Short Story: The No. 25 Gannon women's soccer team claimed its third straight shutout win Wednesday evening with a 3-0 victory against Roberts Wesleyan. Sophomore Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) recorded two goals in the win, while junior Nicole Felice (Cleveland, Ohio/Laurel School) notched one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis put Gannon up 1-0 in the 13th minute when a Roberts Wesleyan defender misplayed the ball right to Lewis in front of the goal.
  • Felice headed in her first goal of the season in the 40th minute to put Gannon up 2-0 at halftime. Redshirt senior Sarah Kaiser (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) was credited with the assist, her fourth of the year. 
  • Gannon held a 9-2 advantage in shots at the break.
  • Lewis tallied her sixth goal of the season in the 69th minute when she stole the ball away from a Redhawk defender and scored in the lower right corner.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon finished the game with an 11-9 shot advantage and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Lady Knights recorded more fouls than the Redhawks, 8-5.
  • Senior goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) tallied four saves for her sixth win of the season.  
  • Roberts Wesleyan goalie Kelsey Brinkel made five saves and allowed two goals, while Madison Lamarche allowed Gannon's final goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Lady Knights were ranked No. 25 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll and No. 3 in the Atlantic regional rankings. It's Gannon first appearance in the coaches poll since being listed 21st in the preseason edition released August 10, 2016. 
  • Lewis moved into a tie with Anna Sander (1999-02) for 12th place all-time at Gannon with her 17th career goal. 
  • Lewis recorded multiple goals for the second time in the last three games and the fifth time in her career. 
  • Lewis' first goal of the game is her seventh career game-winning goal.
  • Gannon has not allowed a goal since September 9 against Kutztown (in 506 minutes and 51 seconds). It was the Lady Knight's sixth shutout this season and fifth consecutive shutout, tying the school record set August 30-September 14, 2012. 
  • Indacochea recorded her fifth shutout of the season in goal, representing the eighth-highest single-season total in school history. She needs just three more shutouts to tie the school record held by Sabrina Chirco (2008) and Kelena Miller (2000). 
  • Indacochea earned her ninth career victory, moving into a tie with Candace Palkovic (1991-94) for eighth place all-time at Gannon.
