Gannon Volleyball earned its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Millersville on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Lady Knights were led with a double-double from sophomore
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) who recorded 14 kills and 13 digs.
Millersville led off the first set with eight-straight points before the Lady Marauders' Erin Harmon delivered a service error.
Maggie Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) issued the first kill for Gannon and the Lady Knights began their comeback. Down 11-2, Gannon rattled off nine of the next 13 points to climb back to 15-11. A Millersville timeout spurred three-straight points to get the lead back out to 18-11.
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and
Rebekah Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) had back-to-back kills and Gannon trailed 18-13. Down 20-13, Gannon issued eight-straight points to take the first lead of the set, 21-20. Tied at 26, Gannon closed out the set with a
Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) kill, followed by an
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) kill. The Lady Knights took the set, 28-26.
Millersville returned with its blistering start in set two. The Lady Marauders began with six-consecutive points before Gannon called a timeout. Gannon gained traction midway through the set. The Lady Knights pulled to within 15-12 on a
Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) service ace. Gannon managed to get back to even at 21 with a
Lexi Johnson (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) kill. Gannon pulled ahead on kills from
Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and
Rebekah Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) to take the set, 25-23.
Gannon didn't allow Millersville to pull out early in set three. Two Ansec kills had the Lady Knights out to an early 5-3 lead. Gannon had a stretch of scoring seven-of-eight points to pull out to a 12-5 lead. The Lady Knights continued to hold their lead through the middle portion of the set. Gannon had its largest lead of the set with the final point.
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) and
Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) combined for a block to take the final set, 25-15.
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led Gannon with her fourth, and third-straight, double-double of the season. Smith recorded 14 kills and 13 digs.
Carolyn Knollman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led Gannon in both digs (17) and assists (36).
Gannon improves to 11-3, 1-1 in the conference while Millersville falls to 9-2, 1-1 in the PSAC.
Gannon will return home on Sept. 29 against Pitt-Johnstown. The PSAC match will begin at 7 p.m. The Mountain Cats and Lady Knights last met up for the conference championship in 2016. Gannon won the match, 3-0.
