Gannon Lady Knights Down Roberts Wesleyan and Lindenwood at Urbana Invitational

ERIE, Pa. - Gannon Volleyball closed out the 2017 Urbana Invitational with two victories on Saturday, Sept. 16. Gannon began the day with a 3-0 sweep of the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks, 25-8, 25-19, 25-22, followed by another 3-0 sweep of the Lindenwood Lions, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.

In the first match of the day, Gannon made quick work of the Redhawks. Roberts Wesleyan was still in search of its first victory of the season and it didn't come against the Lady Knights. Gannon made quick work of the Redhawks. Gannon held RWU to just eight points in set one, the second-fewest points by an opponent in a set this season. Only one more than a seven-point set from Glenville State on Sept. 8. The Lady Knights followed with set victories of 25-19 and 25-22.

Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) paced the Lady Knights with 11 kills and 24 digs. The 24 digs for Leitshuh were a career-high. It was Leitshuh's third double-double of the season. Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) also issued 21 digs for the Lady Knights. Ashley Beyers (Lanark, Ill./Eastland) led the way in assists (28) and service aces (5).

Gannon improved to 9-2 while Roberts Wesleyan dropped to 0-11.

Gannon looked strong in the second match of the day against Lindenwood. The Lady Knights took control of set one with a 25-20 victory. Set two was identical to the first with the same 25-20 ending in the favor of the Lady Knights. Gannon closed out the match with a tight 25-23 victory in set three.

Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio/Solon) led the way with 13 kills. Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added  her second double-double with 10 kills and 39 digs. The 39 digs were a career-high for the sophomore. Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) also chipped in 21 digs for the Lady Knights. Rebekah Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) had an eight-kill, three-block performance.

Gannon elevated its record to 10-2 while Lindenwood took a step back to 8-3.

The Lady Knights will now turn their attention to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with Shippensburg and Millersville on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23. Gannon will take on the Raiders at 7 p.m. and the Marauders at 1 p.m.
