Gannon Women's Soccer Team Battles Bloomsburg to First Regular-Season Scoreless Tie at Home Since 2010

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team out-shot Bloomsburg 22-8, but was unable to find the back of the net as the Lady Knights settled for a double-overtime scoreless tie Saturday afternoon in a battle of regionally-ranked teams at a sun-drenched McConnell Family Stadium. It represented Gannon's first regular-season scoreless tie at home since September 6, 2010.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was played on relatively even terms with Gannon holding a 6-3 edge in shots.
  • Bloomsburg goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins made her only two saves of the first half during the opening 15 minutes.
  • Gannon goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) needed to make only one save to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard, recording that stop in the 25th minute.
  • Bloomsburg's Sam Rodkey also hit the post in the 31st minute.
  • The two teams put a little more pressure on the goalkeepers during the second half, taking 13 combined shots during the second 45 minutes.
  • Gannon managed four shots during the first 30 minutes of the second half, but was unable to put any on goal.
  • In the 72nd minute, Indacochea was injured racing for the ball near the top of the box. Freshman Hannah Pufpaff (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Saint Mary's of Lancaster) was then call off the bench to man the net for the remainder of the contest. She immediately made a save 48 seconds later to preserve the shutout.
  • Gannon took the last shot of regulation in the 86th minute, before the two teams needed extra time.
  • The Lady Knights dominated the overtime, starting with a 5-0 edge in shots during the first session. Hawkins was forced to make a save on four of those five attempts and pushed the contest into a second overtime period.
  • Gannon pressured the entire 10 minutes, but managed only two shots. Both were turned away by Hawkins who made six saves during the two overtime sessions before the two programs settled for a double-overtime, scoreless tie.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest was played in perfect weather conditions. Sunny skies with temperatures in the 70's greeted the two teams.
  • Gannon finished with a 22-8 edge in shots, including a 7-1 difference during the two overtime periods.
  • The Lady Knights also topped the Huskies in corner kicks (9-2) and fouls (17-10).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic regional rankings while Bloomsburg is tabbed ninth.
  • The Lady Knights haven't allowed a goal for 236 minutes and 51 seconds spanning three matches. The squad posted a 3-0 shutout at Pitt-Johnstown during its previous match. The last goal allowed by the Lady Knights came in the 54th minute of a road contest at Kutztown on September 9.
  • Gannon was involved in a double-overtime scoreless tie for first time since October 11, 2016 at Edinboro. It was the first played at McConnell Family Stadium since the PSAC Quarterfinals against East Stroudsburg on November 1, 2012 and the first during the regular season at home since September 6, 2010 against West Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Saturday's contest was the first of a brief two-match homestand.
  • Pufpaff saw time in goal for the first time during her collegiate career.
  • Indacochea and Pufpaff joined to produce Gannon's first team shutout since Indacochea and Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame C.S.S.) split time in a 2-0 victory at Mansfield on October 8, 2016.
  • Gannon's 22 shots represented its second-highest total of the season behind 24 attempts taken last match at Pitt-Johnstown.
  • The Lady Knights are now 5-2-2 during their last nine match-ups with the Huskies.
  • Gannon took nine corner kicks for the second time in its last three matches.
