Gannon's Fast Start Too Much for Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC Opener

  • The Short Story – The Gannon Men's Soccer team collected its first victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Pitt-Johnstown on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The Golden Knights sprinted out to a 3-0 lead before halftime and hung on for the victory.

GAMEDAY CENTRAL
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Stannard (Hull, England/Cottingham) used a free kick to tally his first goal of the season in the sixth minute. He bent a ball into the right corner of the goal for the early Golden Knight lead.
  • In the 10th minute Gannon was back on the attack with Alex Lee Yaw (Jamestown, N.Y./Mercyhurst Prep) setting up Mathias Krigbaum (Greve, Denmark/Greve Gymnasium) for chip shot past the diving Mountain Cat goalie. Krigbaum's second goal of 2017 gave Gannon a 2-0 lead.
  • Luis Driemel (Berlin, Germany/Leibniz-Schule) was the recipient of a Lee Yaw cross in the 22nd minute that resulted in Gannon's third goal. Driemel netted his his first goal of the season.
  • Gannon took a 3-0 lead to halftime.
  • Pitt-Johnstown gained some traction in the second half. John Knox got the Mountain Cats on the board in the 58th minute.
  • UPJ added a second goal in the 82nd minute as D.J. Vogelman converted a penalty kick.
  • Pitt-Johnstown wasn't able to push across the tying goal, however, as Gannon hung on for a 3-2 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • The start of the match was delayed several hours due to a bussing issue.
  • Gannon outshot Pitt-Johnstown by a 31-7 margin.
  • The 31 Golden Knight shots were the most since Oct. 11, 2014 when Gannon also took 31 shots in a 4-3 loss to Lock Haven.
  • Gannon is 5-0 all-time against the Mountain Cats.
  • Jorge Hernandez (Atvidaberg, Sweden/Bildningscentrum Facetten) picked up his first goalie victory of 2017.

  • Gannon returns home to take on Bloomsburg on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m.
  • The Golden Knights are 12-3-1 all-time against the Huskies.
