  • The Short Story: Sophomore Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) headed in a free kick by senior Hannah Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) in the 103rd minute to push the Gannon women's soccer team past Clarion 1-0 in the season opener. 

GAMEDAY CENTRAL
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon out-shot Clarion 9-6 during regulation (5-4 first half and 4-2 second half), but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 90 minutes.
  • Manczka and junior Nicole Felice (Cleveland, Ohio/Laurel School) (Cleveland, Ohio/Laurel School) each accounted for three shots, while sophomore Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) had two. 
  • Neither team registered a shot during the first overtime period.
  • Cekella's golden goal came 2:41 into the second overtime on Manczka's assist. 
  • Senior Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) recorded one save in the victory for the Lady Knights. 

GAME NOTES
  • Cekella's goal is the second of her career. Her first career goal came in the 2-1 win over California (Pa.) on October 25, 2016. Cekella recorded a team-high five assists last fall during her rookie year.
  • Manczka recorded her seventh career assist in her senior debut.   
  • Gannon held a 10-6 advantage in total shots and 3-1 in shots on goal, while Clarion maintained a slight advantage in corner kicks, 3-1.
  • Clarion received one red card and one yellow card, as well as five offside calls. The hosts also held a 14-9 foul advantage.

  • Gannon hosts Edinboro in the home-opener  at McConnell Family Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
