Gannon Women's Soccer Team Knocks off Edinboro in Home Opener, 3-1

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: at Gannon 3, Edinboro 1

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team fought back from an early 1-0 deficit with three straight goals to earn a 3-1 victory over Edinboro on Wednesday evening in the home opener at McConnell Family Stadium. Three different Lady Knights recorded goals in the win, sparked by 2016 returning top-scorer Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), who tied the game in the 16th minute with her 12th career goal. Rookies Megan McCartney (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) also registered their first career goals in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Ashley Mutkus put Edinboro up 1-0 in the 13th minute, Gannon went on to score the next three goals of the contest.
  • Lewis tied things up in the 16th minute when she dribbled down the right side of the field and buried it from 15 yards out. The goal was Lewis' first of the season and 12th of her young career.
  • McCartney put the Lady Knights up 2-1 just before halftime when she took a deflected pass ahead from Sarah Kaiser (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and knocked it past the Edinboro goalkeeper on the left side in the 41st minute.
  • In the 67th minute, Bevacqua gave Gannon an insurance goal when she hit one from the right side at 25 yards out.
  • Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) had three saves in goal her second win of the season. 

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon mustered a 14-12 advantage in shots, as well as a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The visiting Fighting Scots held a 7-6 advantage in fouls, while both teams had two yellow cards apiece.
  • The game served as the 2017 home opener for the Lady Knights.
  • The teams last met on Nov. 1, 2016 when Gannon claimed a 1-0 overtime victory in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Edinboro.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Edinboro was among the five teams receiving votes in the recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll released Tuesday.
  • In the initial United Soccer Coaches Atlantic regional rankings released Tuesday, Edinboro was tabbed at fourth, while Gannon was ranked fifth.
  • Edinboro head coach Gary Kagiavas was a standout defender at Gannon from 1987-91 and played on the Golden Knight team that advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1989 and 1990.
