Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Opens Home Weekend with Setback Against No. 11 West Chester

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No. 11 West Chester 21, at Gannon 6
  • Records: Gannon (2-7, 0-5 PSAC), West Chester (7-2, 4-1 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The 11th-ranked West Chester women's lacrosse team scored the first five goals en route to an 11-3 halftime lead and posted a 21-6 victory against Gannon Friday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Chester opened the contest with the first five goals, racing to a 5-0 lead 10 minutes and 59 seconds after the first draw control.
  • Junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) put Gannon on the board 50 seconds later, converting a free-position shot.
  • Freshman Kennedy Walters (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) followed with a goal off a King assist to cut the deficit to 5-2 midway through the first half.
  • The two clubs split the next two scores, capped by sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy)'s fourth goal of the season that put the West Chester lead at 6-3 with 13:58 left in the first half.
  • The Golden Rams then pulled away with five unanswered goals during the final 13 minutes and went to the halftime locker room with an 11-3 advantage.
  • West Chester started the second half with three more scores. Back-to-back free-position goals capped an 8-0 run that stretched both halves and started a running clock with a 14-3 difference.
  • Gannon got off the deck and pulled back within single digits after three straight goals.
  • Senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) finished consecutive passes from King for the first two goals, before sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) converted a pass from Mitchell midway through the second half. The blitz cut the deficit to 14-6.
  • However, West Chester countered with the final seven tallies to account for the 21-6 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • West Chester controlled the statistics sheet with advantages in shots (35-17), ground balls (22-19), draw controls (17-11), fewest fouls (26-27) and fewest turnovers (16-18).
  • King led the Gannon offensive charge with one goal, four assists, five points, five draw controls, five ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Mitchell was the only other Lady Knight with multiple goals, scoring twice.
  • Capozzo, Bower and Walters completed the scoring with one goal each. 
  • Bower added three draw controls and two caused turnovers to go along with her score.
  • In addition to three ground balls, Capozzo completed Gannon's trio with at least three draw control winners.
  • Sophomore Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) chipped in three ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her ninth consecutive start in goal, recording six saves during the first half and seven total. She also caused a team-high four turnovers and secured three ground balls.

  • West Chester is ranked No. 11 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 20 Poll.
  • Gannon played its first home match since March 21, spanning 17 days.
  • Friday's contest started with snow falling and temperatures in the 30's with a wind chill near 20 degrees.
  • West Chester won its ninth consecutive match against Gannon, improving to 18-3 in the all-time series.
  • Mitchell became the 20th Lady Knight in program history to record 150 career points.
  • Gannon's 11 caused turnovers were its most since causing 13 against Bloomsburg on April 10, 2016.
  • King dished out at least four assists for the fourth time this season.
  • Mitchell scored multiple goals for the fifth consecutive match.
