Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Ends Perfect Homestand with 11-5 Victory Against Rival Edinboro

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead while holding rival Edinboro scoreless for the first 18:32 and posted an 11-5 victory Wednesday afternoon during the Lady Knights' 2017 home finale at McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon was off and running with the opening six goals. Freshman Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) started the opening run with a free-position goal 2:19 into the contest.
  • Junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) followed with back-to-back unassisted goals. The second score came off a free-position shot, giving the Lady Knights a 3-0 advantage.
  • Sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), sophomore Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) accounted for the next three goals as the lead ballooned to 6-0 with 12:29 left in the first half. King assisted on the first two, before Rotondo started the final scoring play.
  • Edinboro finally got on the board at the 11:28 mark and later cut the deficit to 6-2 with 6:31 showing on the clock.
  • Gannon countered with unassisted scores from sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) and King during the final six minutes while surging into halftime with an 8-2 edge.
  • The second half opened as a defensive affair, before Gannon scored the first goal nearly 10 minutes after the break. King tallied her fourth score of the match off an assist from sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) for a 9-2 lead. 
  • Edinboro tried to rally and cut the deficit to 9-4 with consecutive goals.
  • However, Gannon countered with two of the last three scores to secure an 11-5 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon out-shot Edinboro 20-12, including a 13-5 edge during the opening 30 minutes.
  • The Lady Knights also held advantages in ground balls (21-18), draw controls (13-5) and fewest fouls (17-18).
  • Both teams committed 19 turnovers each.
  • King led the Gannon offensive unit with four goals, two assists, six points, 11 draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Shields was the only other Lady Knight with multiple goals, scoring twice.
  • Capozzo, Mitchell, Rotondo, Bower and Martinelli rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
  • Bower finished with a team-high four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Senior Katie Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) forced three turnovers and secured a team-high four ground balls.
  • Capozzo had a solid all-around match with one goal, one assist, two points, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her 15th consecutive start in goal, recording three saves.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Wednesday's match represented Gannon's last of the season at McConnell Family Stadium where it finished 4-4.
  • The contest was played in arguably the best weather conditions of the season with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70's.
  • Gannon improved to 9-1 all-time against Edinboro, including a perfect 6-0 mark at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • The Lady Knights reached double digits in goals for the seventh time this season.
  • Edinboro's five goals were the fewest by a Gannon opponent since the Lady Knights posted a 22-5 victory at Young Harris (Ga.) on May 7, 2015. 
  • The Fighting Scots' one assist and five draw controls represented the fewest by a Gannon opponent since they had the same totals during last year's match-up at Sox Harrison Stadium.
  • Edinboro's six points and 12 shots were the fewest by a Gannon opponent since Young Harris (Ga.) matched both totals during a 19-5 home loss to the Lady Knights on March 8, 2014.
