Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Drops 13-9 Decision at Slippery Rock

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Slippery Rock women's lacrosse team snapped a 4-4 tie with two goals during the final 2:35 of the first half and proceeded to post a 13-9 victory against Gannon Tuesday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slippery Rock sandwiched a goal from sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) with two scores on each side to assume a 5-1 advantage with 11:03 remaining in the first half.
  • Gannon rallied with three consecutive goals to tie to match at four. Senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) started the run by finishing a pass from sophomore Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). Freshman Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) followed with unassisted tallies to create a 4-4 deadlock with 2:46 left in the opening half.
  • Slippery Rock rebounded with two goals during the final minutes and went to the intermission with a 6-4 lead.
  • After nearly seven scoreless minutes after the break, Rotondo cut the deficit to 6-5 with a goal off sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy)'s assist.
  • The Rock then produced the decisive run with five consecutive scores during the span of two minutes and 12 seconds. Caitlynn Palladino accounted for three of those scores, bumping the SRU lead to 11-5 with 20:01 remaining.
  • Trailing 13-6, Gannon produced the last three goals during the final three minutes and 46 seconds. Mitchell found the back of the net for the final two scores, before Slippery Rock secured a 13-9 victory.

  • Slippery Rock generated advantages in shots (19-14), ground balls (21-19) and fewest turnovers (17-21).
  • Gannon countered with the better statistical sheet in draw controls (14-10) and fewest fouls (15-21).
