Gannon Lady Knights Complete a Pair of Comebacks Against Slippery Rock

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball rallied for two more one-run victories on Monday, April 10, at Slippery Rock. The Lady Knights have won four-straight games by one run.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Slippery Rock picked up single runs in the first and second innings to give them a 2-0 advantage headed to the third.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) occupied the corners as Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) stepped to the plate in the third inning and launched a three-run bomb out of the park, giving Gannon a 3-2 lead.
  • It was Morgan's fifth home run of the season.
  • Slippery Rock strung together a couple of base hits in the bottom of the third to edge back to even with the Lady Knights at three runs apiece.
  • Morgan's spot in the lineup came around again in the fifth inning with Jenn Krider (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) standing on third. Morgan worked a full count before she ripped a ball to right field for her fourth RBI of the day. Gannon led 4-3.
  • Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) worked the final four innings without a Rock runner crossing the plate and picked up the pitching victory by a 4-3 final.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, four RBI and one run scored.
  • Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) pitched seven innings of seven-hit ball, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven.
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) had a 2-for-2 day with a walk.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Morgan hit her fifth home run of the season with the third-inning blast.
  • Gannon won its seventh one-run game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Morgan tallied her fifth RBI of the day with a double down the right field line to score Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) in the first inning.
  • Slippery took the lead in the sixth with a four-hit inning that resulted in three runs. The Rock led 3-1 headed to the final inning.
  • Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led off the seventh with a single to left-center.
  • Slippery Rock made two consecutive outs and the Lady Knights were down to their final out with Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) at the plate. Martinez worked a 2-1 count before she singled up the middle to keep the game alive.
  • Ingerick was next up and she lined a ball to right field where the Rock misplayed it; Wilp and Martinez rounded the bases and came home to tie the game at three.
  • Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) stepped to the plate to keep the rally going and delivered a single to right that completed the comeback, Gannon up 4-3.
  • Perich shut the door in the bottom of the seventh and preserved the 20th victory of the season for Gannon.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Gannon.
  • Perich pitched six innings, exiting in the sixth inning after five batters with no outs. Beining got out of the inning and Perich returned in the seventh.
  • Beining receives the win as she was in the lineup when Gannon took the lead in the seventh.
  • Perich gets her second save of the season after re-entering in the seventh.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon moved to 8-2 in one-run games this season.
  • The Lady Knights extended their conference record to 7-1, tops in the PSAC West Division.
  • Gannon won its fifth game in its last nine attempts in the last at-bat of the game.
  • The Lady Knights have won three-straight games by a 4-3 final.

  • Gannon softball will play at home against California (Pa.) on Wednesday, April 12, in a pair of PSAC games.
