Moran's Bomb Lifts Gannon in Jakubowski's 200th Career Victory

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon Softball split a doubleheader against Lake Erie on Wednesday, April 29, at McConnell Family Stadium. Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) propelled the Lady Knights in game one with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The win marked Head Coach Tom Jakubowski's 200th career victory.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • The pitchers were in control of game one early. Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) began the game for Gannon with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning.
  • Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) delivered Gannon's first hit in the top of the second inning with a lead-off single to center field.
  • Gumbita continued to mow down batters as she only allowed one hit through the first four innings, striking out five.
  • Gannon stranded single base runners in both the fifth and sixth innings. Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) reached in the fifth on a walk and Taylor Wilp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) singled to right in the sixth.
  • Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) stepped to the plate in the seventh inning and launched a home run over the left field wall to give the Lady Knights a 1-0 victory.
     
GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • It was Moran's first home run of the season and 10th of her career.
  • Moran had a 2-for-3 game with a home run and RBI.
  • Gumbita went seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Head Coach Tom Jakubowski won his 200th career game at the helm of the Lady Knights.
  • Jakubowski's first win at Gannon came on March 1, 2009 against Wilmington (W, 10-3).
  • Gumbita tossed her eighth complete game of the season and 53rd of her career.
  • Gumbita sits second among PSAC players with 74 strikeouts in 67 innings pitched this season.
  • Wednesday's doubleheader was the 2017 home-opening games for the Lady Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Lake Erie had bases loaded in the second and third innings but both times Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) pitched out of the jam for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon drew first blood in the second game after Morgan Nyman (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) produced in a squeeze situation in the third inning. Nyman hit a ball back to the pitcher that had Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) scampering home safe on the play.
  • The Storm had the bases loaded again in the fourth inning and this time they converted for four runs in the inning. Lake Erie took a 4-1 lead after four innings of play.
  • Gannon inched closer in the fifth. Perich led off with a single followed by a Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) double.
  • With runners on second and third, Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) punched Perich home with a shot to center field. Morgan advanced to third on the play.
  • Nyman was next up and she hit a deep fly to left field that allowed Morgan to score. Gannon trailed 4-3 after five.
  • The Lady Knights gave it one last shot in the seventh inning. Nyman hit a one-out rocket to right field but was gunned down at first base for an out.
  • Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) was hit by the pitch in the next at-bat but couldn't find her way home and Lake Erie took the game, 4-3.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Morgan went 2-for-3 from the plate, scoring one run.
  • Nyman was 1-for-2 with two RBI's.
  • Six Lady Knights had one hit in the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Nyman's hit and two RBI's were the first of her career for the Lady Knights.
  • Gannon is 2-2 in one-run games this season. Three of those games have been against Lake Erie.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action on Friday, March 31 at Mercyhurst.
