King Becomes Gannon's All-Time Draw Control Leader and Mitchell Scores 100th Career Goal in Women's Lacrosse Setback at Kutztown

  • The Short Story: The Kutztown women's lacrosse team overcame a 7-2 first-half deficit by out-scoring Gannon 10-3 during the final 31 minutes and posted a come-from-behind 12-10 victory Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match at Andre Reed Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kutztown initially assumed a 2-1 lead after the first 13 minutes of action.
  • Gannon later exploded for six consecutive goals over the span of seven minutes and 22 seconds.
  • Sophomore Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) ignited the blitz with back-to-back scores that flipped a one-goal deficit into a one-goal advantage.
  • Senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) followed with consecutive goals to increase the Gannon lead to 5-2.
  • Sixteen seconds after Mitchell's second score, junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) found the back of the net. King then scored again with 1:49 remaining in the first half, pushing the Lady Knights' lead to 7-2.
  • Kutztown managed to score the final goal of the first half with 58 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 7-3 at the intermission.
  • The Golden Bears came out of the locker room on fire, scoring three times during the opening two minutes and 23 seconds of the second half to claw within 7-6.
  • Freshman Kennedy Walters (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder)' third goal of the season momentarily stopped the Kutztown surge, but the Golden Bears continued with the next five scores. In all, Kutztown grabbed an 11-8 advantage by producing a 9-1 run that lasted 20 minutes and 34 seconds.
  • Mitchell scored her fourth goal of the match with 8:52 to play, ending Gannon's scoreless stretch that lasted 18 minutes and 39 seconds.
  • Sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) followed with her ninth tally of the season, cutting the deficit to 11-10 with 6:42 remaining.
  • However, Kutztown won the ensuing draw control and scored to regain a two-goal edge at 12-10.
  • Gannon was granted a free-position attempt at the 4:30 mark, but the Kutztown goalkeeper was up to the challenge and made the save. The Golden Bears then ran out the remainder of the time without losing possession, clinching a 12-10 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Kutztown out-shot Gannon 31-22, including a 15-9 edge during the final 30 minutes.
  • The Golden Bears also produced advantages in ground balls (15-14), draw controls (14-10), fewest fouls (24-25) and fewest turnovers (8-9).
  • Mitchell led all scorers on both sides with a season-high four goals and one assist.
  • King recorded two goals, a season-high four assists, six draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Shields added two first-half scores.
  • Bower and Walters completed the scoring with one goal each.
  • Junior Jessica Lambert (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) topped the defensive unit with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her sixth consecutive start goal, recording a season-high 12 saves between the pipes. She made eight of her 12 saves during the first half. Tate also posted season-highs in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (2).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon played its first road game since a 15-14 victory at St. Leo (Fla.) on March 3, a span of 22 days.
  • Kutztown defeated the Lady Knights for the first time in eight all-time meetings.
  • Gannon's eight assists were its most since dishing out nine against Bloomsburg at McConnell Family Stadium on April 10, 2016.
  • The Lady Knights' nine turnovers were their fewest since matching that total at Seton Hill on March 21, 2015.
  • King tied her season-high with six draw controls for the third consecutive match and fourth time in six matches.
  • Sophomore Amberlynn Kegler (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) entered the contest with two career ground balls, before securing three against the Golden Bears.
  • King became Gannon's all-time leader in draw controls with 219. She surpassed Shannon Pagano (2004-07) with 4:42 remaining in the match.
  • Mitchell became the 17th Lady Knight in program history to score 100 career goals in the first half.
