Gannon Women's Lacrosse Upset Bid of No. 17 IUP Falls Short in Closing Minutes

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: No 17 Indiana (Pa.) 15, at Gannon 8
  • Records: Gannon (2-3, 0-1 PSAC), Indiana (Pa.) (2-2, 1-0 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team never trailed for the first 50 minutes and 43 seconds, but No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) snapped an 8-8 tie with seven unanswered goals during the final 9:17 and pulled out a 15-8 victory in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both programs Tuesday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams found themselves in a defensive battle early, before Gannon struck first on junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta)'s goal off an assist from sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) 5:16 into the contest.
  • Both sides alternated goals throughout the entire first half. Gannon later grabbed one-goal leads after scores from sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) and junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy), but IUP answered with the tying goal both times.
  • Sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) finished a pass from freshman Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) with 1:27 showing on the clock to give the Lady Knights a 4-3 advantage which eventually proved to be the halftime score.
  • IUP needed only 43 seconds of the second half to tie the match at four, before Gannon ripped off a pair of goals to assume a 6-4 lead. Martinelli initially snapped the tie after finishing an assist from sophomore Amberlynn Kegler (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport). King followed with a free-position goal at the 23:40 mark.
  • Trailing 7-6, Indiana (Pa.) scored consecutive goals one minute and 12 seconds apart to grab its first lead of the afternoon at 8-7 with 13:03 remaining.
  • King countered with an unassisted goal at the 10:25 mark to create the seventh tie of the contest.
  • IUP then took over. The Crimson Hawks scored seven unanswered goals during the final nine minutes and 13 seconds to secure a 15-8 victory. The visitors converted four straight shots while extending its 9-8 lead into a 13-8 advantage.

GAME NOTES
  • The statistical sheet was close despite the final score that was caused by IUP's late run.
  • Indiana (Pa.) held slim advantages in shots (27-25), ground balls (21-17), draw controls (15-11) and fewest turnovers (20-22).
  • Gannon was whistled for 13 fouls compared to IUP's 39. The Crimson Hawks had 25 of their 39 fouls during the final 30 minutes.
  • King had a solid all-around performance with two goals, one assist, six ground balls, six draw controls and five caused turnovers.
  • Mitchell, Bower and Martinelli rounded out the scoring with two scores each.
  • Senior Katie Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) led the defensive unit with three ground balls.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her fifth consecutive start goal, recording five saves between the pipes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Tuesday's warm-ups started under sunny skies which turned into heavy fog for the majority of the pregame festivities. The fog eventually faded, before the match was played under partly cloudy skies with wind chills dipping into the 30's.
  • Gannon and Indiana (Pa.) were both playing their first conference match of the season.
  • The Crimson Hawks have won the last six matches in the all-time series after the Lady Knights had won the first 15 contests.
  • IUP's 20 turnovers were the most by a Gannon opponent since Shippensburg had 29 during a 16-13 Gannon victory on April 1, 2016.
  • King's five caused turnovers tied a career-high set during a 14-6 win against East Stroudsburg at McConnell Family Stadium on March 28, 2015.
  • Miller secured a season-high three ground balls for the second time during the last three contests.
  • King tied her season-high with six draw controls for the third time in five matches.
  • King dished out her 50th career assist midway through the first half, becoming the 15th Lady Knight in program history to accomplish that feat. She also became the 11th Lady Knight since 2004 to cause 50 turnovers.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon begins a three-match road swing Saturday, March 25 at Kutztown.
  • The PSAC contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Live gameday statistics will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/kutztown/wlax.
  • Gannon will be playing its first road match since a 15-14 victory at St. Leo (Fla.) on March 3, a span of 22 days.
  • The Lady Knights are 7-0 all-time against Kutztown, including a 12-8 win last year at McConnell Family Stadium.
