King's Career-High Seven Goals Propels Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team to 16-13 Victory Against Findlay

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: at Gannon 16, Findlay 13
  • Records: Gannon (2-2), Findlay (2-5)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: Junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) scored all five of Gannon's second-half goals en route to a career-high seven-goal performance as the Lady Knights defeated Findlay 16-13 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's lacrosse match-up at McConnell Family Stadium.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon was the aggressor early with the first three goals from senior Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston), sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and senior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta).
  • Findlay finally got on the scoreboard six minutes and 41 seconds into the contest, but the Lady Knights responded with two more scores by freshman Erin Rotondo (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and sophomore Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) that extended the lead to 5-1 at the 21:21 mark.
  • After a free-position score by the Oilers, King and Martinelli found the back of the net as Gannon assumed its biggest lead of the afternoon at 7-2 with 18:16 remaining in the first half.
  • Findlay regrouped and scored four of the next five goals, clawing within 8-6 at the 7:07 mark.
  • Gannon doubled its lead again after back-to-back scores from Mozingo and King pushed the difference to 10-6 with 4:36 showing on the clock.
  • Findley then ripped off three consecutive goals and appeared to be heading into the halftime locker room with a 10-9 deficit and the momentum.
  • However, Martinelli fired a shot past the Findlay goalkeeper with 4.6 seconds remaining in the half, giving Gannon an 11-9 halftime advantage and swinging the tide back in the Lady Knights' favor.
  • King opened the second half with back-to-back goals as Gannon regained control with a 13-9 edge.
  • Leading 14-11, the Lady Knights iced the match with two more King tallies. The pair of unassisted scores pushed the lead to 16-11 with 5:03 to play.
  • Findlay produced two goals during the final 53 seconds, but was unable to get any closer before the final horn signaled a 16-13 Gannon victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon held advantages in ground balls (19-17), draw controls (17-14), fewest fouls (8-18) and fewest turnovers (18-19).
  • Findlay had the upper hand in shots by a 30-25 count.
  • King led the offensive unit with a career-high seven goals on only eight shots, including all five of Gannon's second-half scores. She also recorded six draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Martinelli produced a hat trick during the first half.
  • Mozingo chipped in two goals, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy), Mitchell, Rotondo and Bower added one score each.
  • Capozzo also had five draw controls and three ground balls.
  • Bower's resume included three draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • King, Capozzo, Bower and junior Jessica Lambert (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) led the team in ground balls with three each.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her fourth consecutive start goal, recording seven saves between the pipes for the second straight match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon was forced to play in poor weather conditions for the second consecutive home match. One week after playing Lake Erie with a game time temperature of 20 degrees and wind chills of five degrees, the Lady Knights played Findlay in a constant rain and temperatures hovering around the freezing mark.
  • Saturday's contest represented the first-ever match-up between Gannon and Findlay.
  • The Lady Knights' 16 goals and 22 points were their most since having 16 goals and 25 points during 16-13 victory at Shippensburg on April 1, 2016.
  • Saturday's 20 combined goals represented the highest-scoring first half during a match involving Gannon since the Lady Knights held a 14-6 halftime lead at Millersville en route to a 22-7 win on April 20, 2012.
  • Gannon's 11 first-half goals were its most during a half since scoring 13 times in the opening 30 minutes of a 14-6 victory against East Stroudsburg at McConnell Family Stadium on March 28, 2015.
  • King's career-high seven goals were the most by a Lady Knight since Mitchell had that total against Bloomsburg at McConnell Family Stadium on April 10, 2016.
  • Martinelli entered the contest with three career goals, before recording her first career hat trick during the opening 30 minutes.
  • King won six draw controls for the second time during the last three matches.
  • Capozzo picked up three ground balls for the third consecutive contest.
  • Bower, Capozzo and Lambert all set or tied season-highs in ground balls with three.
  • King jumped three players and moved into Gannon's all-time top 20 in career points with 136.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes a four-match homestand Tuesday, March 21 against Indiana (Pa.) at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener is scheduled for 4 p.m.
  • Live gameday statistics will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/gannon/wlax.
  • Gannon is 15-5 all-time against IUP.
