Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Drops Frozen Home Opener Against Lake Erie

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team fell behind 7-1 at halftime and was never able to recover during an 11-4 loss against Lake Erie Saturday afternoon in a frozen home opener at McConnell Family Stadium. The two teams battled through wind chills that dipped to five degrees at game time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lake Erie opened a 3-0 lead midway through the first half behind goals from three different players.
  • Gannon scored its first goal 19 minutes and 11 seconds into the contest, cutting the deficit to 3-1 on sophomore Alexa Bower (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton)'s score off an assist from junior Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy).
  • Lake Erie countered with four more goals during the remainder of the half and went to the intermission with a 7-1 advantage.
  • The two programs split four goals during the opening 13 minutes and 34 seconds of the second half.
  • Bower and freshman Kennedy Walters (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) sandwiched a pair of Lake Erie goals with scores of their own, leaving the Storm's lead at 9-3.
  • The visitors increased their lead to 11-3 with back-to-back tallies from Anastasia Crawford.
  • Bower chipped in one more unassisted goal at the 4:29 mark to account for the final 11-4 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Lake Erie held advantages in shots (25-15), ground balls (20-18), draw controls (10-7), fouls (17-7) and fewest turnovers (18-20).
  • Bower led the offensive unit with three of Gannon's four goals. She also had an assist and two ground balls.
  • Walters recorded the Lady Knights' other score.
  • King finished with two assists, two ground balls and two draw controls.
  • Sophomore Micaela Capozzo (Medford, Mass./Pinkerton Academy) and senior Katie Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) topped the team in ground balls with three each.
  • Freshman Charla Tate (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) made her third consecutive start goal, recording seven saves between the pipes.

  • Saturday's contest was Gannon's 2017 home opener after splitting a two-match southern trip during spring break.
  • The two teams played through winter-like weather that included a game time temperature of 20 degrees with wind chills of five degrees.
  • Gannon suffered its first loss in six all-time meetings against Lake Erie.
  • The Lady Knights had won their last 11 home openers prior to Saturday's match-up.
  • Gannon's last home-opening setback was a 13-10 loss to Lock Haven on March 26, 2005.
