THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball drew within six points of the No. 4-ranked California (Pa.) in the third quarter but the Lady Vulcans were too much. California (Pa.) pulled away with an 88-68 victory.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • California (Pa.) opened up the game scoring the first 20 of 22 points before Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) swung the tide with a jumper.
  • The Lady Knights began to chip away at the early deficit, Mitchell opened up the second quarter with back-to-back three-pointers and Gannon shrunk the lead to 33-19.
  • Next possession, Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for a deuce, drawing Gannon within 33-21 at the 7:36 mark.
  • Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) closed the gap to single digits with 3:36 remaining in the second quarter as she hit a jumper in the paint. California (Pa.) led, 39-30.
  • The Lady Vulcans maintained that nine-point lead into halftime. Gannon kept within reach at 45-36.
  • California (Pa.) hit a shot to begin the third quarter before two Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice)' free throws and a Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) three-pointer that drew the Lady Knights to within six points at 47-41 with 8:33 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The Lady Vulcans kicked it into gear after that. California (Pa.) rattled off a 15-0 run to extend the lead out to 62-41 with 5:06 remaining in the quarter.
  • California (Pa.) outscored Gannon 33-12 in the third period and led 78-48 headed into the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Knights nibbled back from the sizable deficit late in the fourth with two triples and two free throws from Mitchell.
  • She closed the gap to 20 points before the final buzzer sounded, California (Pa.) coming away winners, 88-68.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) backed up her 33-point performance against Seton Hill with 27 points on Wednesday night at California (Pa.).
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) was Gannon's other double-digit scorer with 12 points and three rebounds.
  • Seairra Barrett had a game-high 34 points for the Lady Vulcans.
  • Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) posted a seven-point, seven-rebound performance from off the bench.
  • The Vulcans forced a season-most 31 turnovers out of Gannon. California (Pa.) leads the country in turnovers forced, averaging 28.1 per game.
  • Gannon had a season-low 10 personal fouls in the game.

  • Mitchell was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week on Monday, Jan. 6.
  • Mitchell is averaging 2.3 three-pointers made per game, the second-most triples in the conference.
  • The 12-point effort from Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) was the second-highest total in her career.
  • Herbert collected her fifth game of six or more rebounds this season. 
  • California (Pa.) was ranked fourth in the latest WBCA Coaches' Poll released on Feb. 7.
