Gannon Lady Knights Win Overtime Thriller at Clarion, 73-68

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 73, Clarion 68 (OT)

  • Location: Clarion, Pa. – Tippin Gymnasium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon Women's Basketball team avenged a 75-71 loss on Jan. 14 to Clarion with a 73-68 overtime victory on Saturday night in Tippin Gymnasium. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) led the Lady Knights with 26 points, including a game-tying shot with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon edged out to an 8-5 advantage after both teams struggled to find rhythm after the first seven minutes of play.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) hit a three-pointer at the end of the first quarter that secured a 13-11 lead at the first stoppage.
  • The second quarter was neck-and-neck as neither team had larger than a four-point advantage. Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a bucket to give Gannon a 22-18 lead, the largest lead of the first half.
  • Mitchell closed out the first half with a jumper to give the Lady Knights a 24-21 lead headed into the locker room.
  • 12 seconds into the third quarter, Mitchell hit a statement three that gave Gannon the momentum throughout the quarter.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) backed up Mitchell's triple with back-to-back lay-ups. Gannon led 31-25 with 8:30 on the clock.
  • Braungart pushed the lead to eight with a layup at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter, 35-27.
  • Clarion closed the gap slightly, 45-41, headed into the fourth quarter.
  • Gannon claimed a 53-45 advantage with 5:36 remaining in the game but buckets by Delrika Jones-Carey and Jordan Bekelja started to chip away at the Lady Knights' lead.
  • Clarion tied the game at 53 with 2:03 remaining on a Jones-Carey jumper.
  • The Golden Eagles went up 60-58 on two Tyra Polite free throws with just 13 ticks on the clock but Mitchell responded on the other end with a game-tying shot to send the game to overtime.
  • Once in overtime, Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) had six of her 12 points in the game including the go-ahead bucket with just 1:05 remaining.
  • Free throws by Mitchell and Herbert sealed win down the stretch, 73-68.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) recorded her third straight game of at least 25 points with a game-high 26 tallies and eight rebounds. She scored 33 at Seton Hill and 27 at California (Pa.), prior to Saturday night's game.
  • Gannon shot 28-of-67 (41.8 percent) from the field while Clarion shot 22-of-63 (34.9 percent).
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the game. The 10 rebounds are also a career-best for Tewes.
  • Gannon outscored Clarion 34-22 on points in the paint. 
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's 49 rebounds on Saturday were second only to the Lady Knights' 51-rebound game against West Chester on Nov. 19.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) is ranked among the PSAC's top 10 in blocked shots (5th), rebounds (7th) and double-doubles (T-3rd).
  • In 20 games, Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) has had seven games of at least five points and five rebounds. She had 12 points to go along with eight rebounds at Clarion.
  • Mitchell's eight rebounds represent a career-high for the junior.
  • The Lady Knights are 2-0 in overtime this season. Gannon downed Bloomsburg, 71-63, on Dec. 4 at the Hammermill Center. 
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon Women's Basketball hosts Edinboro on Wednesday, Feb. 15
  • The women's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game around 7:30 p.m. 
  • It will be Gannon's first home game in two weeks.
