Mitchell Drops a Career-High 33 Points; Lady Knights Pull Out 81-71 Victory at Seton Hill

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball used a 33-point performance from Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) to help propel the Lady Knights past Seton Hill, 81-71, on Saturday afternoon in Greensburg, Pa.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied at eight, Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) took a Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) pass and deposited it in the basket to go up 10-8.
  • The Rourke basket sparked a 12-6 over the last five minutes of the quarter. Gannon led 20-14 at the first intermission.
  • Rourke opened up the second quarter for the Lady Knights with an and-one play. Rourke's basket pushed the lead to 23-16.
  • Gannon's lead hit double-digits at 35-23 on back-to-back three-pointers from Rourke and Mitchell. Mitchell's basket came with 3:30 remaining before halftime.
  • In the last two minutes of the half, Mitchell hit two three-pointers and scored an and-one play to give the Lady Knights a 45-27 advantage at the break.
  • When play resumed, baskets from Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) helped push the Gannon lead to 20 points, 55-35.
  • Gannon headed to the final quarter of play with a 57-40 lead.
  • Seton Hill made a fourth quarter charge; back-to-back three-pointers and a layup cut the lead to 59-48 with 8:06 remaining.
  • Another three-pointer by Jenna Kaufman at the 7:33 mark pulled the Griffins back to within single digits at 59-51.
  • Mitchell hit another three at the 6:45 mark to extend the lead back out to 63-52.
  • The Griffins made a mini 5-0 run to draw within 63-57, the closest the deficit had been since the second quarter.
  • Seton Hill was never able to get any closer as the Lady Knights grew the lead back to double-digits and pulled off the upset, 81-71.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) posted a career-high 33 points on 11-of-16 shooting. She connected 7-of-9 from distance and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) added 15 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists.
  • Gannon outrebounded Seton Hill, 36-20. 
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's 13 turnovers were the fewest since committing just 12 against East Stroudsburg on Dec. 10
  • Mitchell's 33 point-performance against Seton Hill  was the second 30+ point game of the season for her.
  • Lanise Saunder's eighth double-double is second among all PSAC players.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) posted her sixth double-figure scoring performance in the last 10 games.
  • The Lady Knights are 2-0 when scoring 80+ points in a game this season.
  • It was the time season that Gannon's opponent shot better than 40 percent from the field and didn't win the game (44.6 percent). Opponents were 8-0 before today.
  • Gannon shot a season best 54.2 percent (26-48) from the field against Seton Hill.
