Gannon Women's Basketball Tops Pitt-Johnstown For Second Time, 65-60 (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 65, Pitt-Johnstown 60

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights hung on to defeat the Pitt-Johnstown Lady Cats on Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center. Gannon pushed its win-streak against Pitt-Johnstown to eight with a 65-60 victory.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon leaped out to a 13-2 advantage over Pitt-Johnstown in the first three minutes of the game. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) capped off the run with a three-pointer from the left wing.
  • The Lady Cats countered with a 15-6 run of their own. UPJ drew within 19-17 on two Olivia McCabe free throws at the 1:43 mark.
  • Gannon ended the quarter up six, 25-19. Rourke had eight points in the opening quarter.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) pushed the lead back to 12, 31-19, on an and-one play just a minute into the second quarter. She converted her free throw, giving Gannon its largest lead of the game.
  • Pitt-Johnstown rattled off a 9-0 run following the Mitchell bucket. Maurina Nunn made it 31-28 just before the media timeout at the 4:14 mark.
  • Gannon went to the break up, 35-33.
  • Pitt-Johnstown held its only lead of the game, up 43-42, when Alexis Hartwick buried a three-pointer with 2:42 remaining of the third quarter.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) took the lead back for Gannon on a layup on the other end of the floor.
  • The Lady Knights held a 46-43 advantage headed to the final quarter.
  • Mitchell opened the fourth quarter with a triple-try that found net. She pushed the lead back to six, 49-43.
  • Gannon kept growing its lead through the fourth. Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) hit a jumper at the 1:54 mark, opening up a 59-47 lead.
  • UPJ ended the game scoring 13 of the final 19 points, but couldn't pull even, falling 65-60..
     
GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights dished out a season-high 19 assists. It's also the third time in the last four games that GU has had at least 18 helpers.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) scored a team-high 16 points to go along with seven assists and four rebounds.
  • Freshman Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) tallied 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) tied her career-high with eight rebounds on Wednesday. Her other eight-rebound game came on Jan. 9 against the same Lady Cat basketball team.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) had a career-best three assists against Pitt-Johnstown.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • 90.4 percent (19-of-21) of Gannon's made baskets were assisted against Pitt-Johnstown. It's the Lady Knight's best ratio of the season.
  • Rourke was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Week for the second-straight week on Feb. 1.
  • With a Slippery Rock 79-55 loss to California (Pa.), Gannon moves into a tie with the Rock at 6-10 in the conference.
  • The Lady Knights extend their win-streak to eight games against Pitt-Johnstown, dating back to the 2013-14 season.
