Gannon Football Team Scores Most Points Against No. 4 IUP's Defense This Year, But Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Physical Affair

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at No. 4 Indiana (Pa.) 42, Gannon 26

  • The Short Story: The Gannon football team scored more points against fourth-ranked Indiana (Pa.) than any other team this year, but was unable to overcome a slow start in a 42-26 setback Saturday afternoon at a rainy George P. Miller Stadium.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Indiana (Pa.) assumed control early with a pair of touchdowns during the first quarter. Samir Bullock and Duane Brown scored on two-yard runs for a 14-0 lead.
  • The Crimson Hawks doubled their advantage to 28-0 at the intermission. Chris Wuestner caught touchdown passes from Lenny Williams of 24 and eight yards to account for the second-quarter scoring. Both scoring drives came after interceptions.
  • IUP extended its lead to 35-0 with the opening score of the third quarter, before Gannon bounced off the floor with consecutive touchdowns. Junior Marc Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) tallied the first score with a one-yard run, before redshirt sophomore Nico Law (Monroeville, Pa./Ringgold) caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) with 3:31 left in the third quarter. The scores cut the deficit to 35-14.
  • Wuestner pulled down his third touchdown reception of the afternoon with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter, sending the Crimson Hawks into the final 15 minutes with a 42-14 advantage.
  • Gannon continued to battle and found the end zone two more times during the final quarter. Keefe connected with redshirt sophomore Dontae Owens (Reading, Pa./Reading) from 22 yards out with 9:23 left in regulation.
  • Jones then scored from nine yards out with 1:26 remaining to account for the final 42-26 score.

GAME NOTES
  • Indiana (Pa.) held advantages in first downs (26-22), rushing yards (206-103), total yards (388-330) and time of possession (34:28-25:32).
  • Gannon countered with a 227-182 edge through the air. 
  • Jones was held under 100 rushing yards for the first time this season, finishing with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He added five receptions for 34 yards.
  • Keefe went 22-of-38 for 227 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
  • Seven different Golden Knights had a reception.
  • Redshirt senior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline) tied Jones for the team lead with five.
  • Owens produced four catches for a team-best 57 yards and one score.
  • Junior Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) and redshirt junior Martell Davis (Columbus, Ohio/Licking Heights) led all defensive players on both sides with 11 tackles.
  • Freshman Tre McNeill (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College) and redshirt junior James Simms (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) added 10 and nine stops, respectively.
  • Entering the game 11th among all NCAA Division II programs in third-down conversion percentage, Gannon converted 9-of-16 third-down attempts and was 1-of-1 in fourth-down tries.
  • Indiana (Pa.) celebrated Senior Day by honoring 20 seniors during pregame festivities.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Entering the day as the leading rusher at all levels of the NCAA, Jones' streak of consecutive 100-yard rushing games ended at eight. He was the first Gannon player in program history to open a season with eight consecutive 100-yard games.
  • Gannon's 26 points were the most scored against IUP this season.
  • The Golden Knights scored at least 22 points for the eighth time in nine games.
  • Keefe set career-highs in pass completions (22) and pass attempts (38).
  • Gannon's 51 solo tackles were its most since having 53 at Ashland on November 10, 2007.
  • An opponent out-rushed the Golden Knights for the first time since October 29, 2016.
  • Redshirt senior Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk) generated a season-high 150 kickoff return yards, falling one shy of his career-high.
  • Davis tied his career-high in tackles (11) for the second time this season, matching his effort at Bloomsburg on September 16.
  • Howard reached double digits in tackles for the fifth time this year.
  • McNeill entered week seven with five career stops, before having 22 during the last three contests. His 10 stops at IUP represented a career-high.
  • Redshirt sophomore Andrew Berger (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) tied his career-high in tackles (9), equaling his total against Slippery Rock on September 23.

  • Gannon concludes its home schedule Saturday, November 4 against Clarion.
