HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon started quickly after its defense stopped Clarion's opening possession. The Golden Knights needed only three plays on their first drive to score when Jones raced 57 yards down the right side for a 7-0 lead 3:09 into the contest.
  • Clarion immediately responded with the tying touchdown during its next possession and later assumed a 14-7 lead with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Gannon responded with a 12-yard, 55-yard drive that knotted the contest at 14. Redshirt senior Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk) ignited the drive with a 30-yard kickoff return to the 45-yard line. The drive included a third-and-six conversion on a 12-yard pass off a scramble by redshirt freshman Jimmy Keefe (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/St. Edward) to Jones. Keefe later converted a fourth-and-one with a quarterback sneak.
  • The drive eventually ended with a 12-yard touchdown run from Jones, drawing Gannon even with 10:20 left in the first half.
  • After the Golden Knights forced a three-and-out, redshirt sophomore Nico Law (Monroeville, Pa./Ringgold) took a punt 66 yards to pay dirt for a 21-14 advantage.
  • The back-and-forth affair continued though as Clarion roared back with a 13-play, 61-yard drive that sent the two teams into the intermission tied at 21.
  • The game turned 180 degrees during a scoreless third quarter with neither team able to score during five combined drives.
  • On the second play of the fourth quarter, redshirt sophomore Dorian Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) intercepted a tipped ball at the Clarion 34-yard line and returned the pick-off 13 yards.
  • Marc Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) followed with consecutive runs of four, 12 and five yards to get into the end zone and give the Golden Knights the lead back at 28-21.
  • However, Clarion created the game's fourth tie midway through the final quarter. The big play of the scoring drive was a 79-yard run by Mylique McGriff on third-and-eight from the Golden Eagles' 13-yard line.
  • Gannon immediately counter punched again with the go-ahead touchdown. The two big plays were a 13-yard completion from redshirt freshman Jason Dambach (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) to redshirt sophomore Joey Cox (Costa Mesa, Calif./Calvary Chapel) on third-and-eight and a 39-yard connection from Dambach to redshirt senior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline). Jones finished off the drive again with a 10-yard touchdown run, giving the Golden Knights a 35-28 edge with 6:59 to play.
  • After forcing a Clarion punt, Gannon iced the victory with nine straight rushing plays that chewed up three minutes and 27 seconds. Senior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) then drilled a 34-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining to clinch the victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Gannon countered with a 235-203 edge on the ground.
  • Jones returned to his typical 100-yard norm with 180 yards and four touchdowns on a career-high 31 carries.
  • Dambach went 3-of-9 for 60 yards through the air in relief.
  • Palka led the receiving group with three catches for 49 yards.
  • Special teams were key as Mansell ripped off 109 yards on four kickoff returns. Law churned out 98 yards on four punt returns.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon honored its eight seniors during pregame festivities as part of Senior Day. Holland, Brendan Klemensic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Charlie Long (Poway, Calif./Poway), Onyenwe, Mansell, Palka, Andrew Peirson (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Secondary School) and Reznor joined their families during the ceremony.
  • The Golden Knights won on Senior Day for the second consecutive year.

  • Gannon has scored at least 22 points nine times in 10 games.
  • Dambach was making his second career appearance, but recorded his first career pass attempt and completion.
  • Berger set a career-high in tackles for the second consecutive week while also setting a career-high in solo tackles.
  • Gannon's 94 passing yards were its fewest in a victory since having 31 passing yards during a 31-9 win against Southern Connecticut State during the 2016 season opener at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Law's punt return for a touchdown was the first of his career and first by a Golden Knight not on a blocked punt since Jesstin Hamm had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown against Slippery Rock on October 3, 2015 at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Harris-Lyles set a new career-high in tackles, surpassing his previous mark by four.
  • Davis and Onyenwe broke their career-highs in tackles for a loss.
  • Jones had at least four rushing touchdowns in a game for the third time this season.
  • Junior Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) will need 15 tackles to become the 11th Golden Knight in program history to reach the 100-tackle plateau in a single season.
  • Jones will enter next week's game at Millersville needing 18 rushing yards to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in one season.
