Gannon Women’s Soccer Team Scores Season-High Five Goals in Victory Against Mansfield




THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's soccer team won its second consecutive game and remained undefeated at McConnell Family Stadium in 2017 with a 5-1 win against Mansfield Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) struck first in the 14th minute when she headed it in from just inside of the left post. Taylor Lewis (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) was credited with the assist on Bevacqua's second goal of the season.
  • Sarah Kaiser (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) made it 2-0 in the 21 minute when she shot the game-winner from 25 yards out.
  • The Lady Knights held a 2-0 lead at the break on a 16-3 shot-advantage.
  • Mansfield's Alexis Bittel played a long ball down the left side and scored on a breakaway in the 52nd minute to cut her team's deficit to one goal. It was her team-leading second goal of the season. 
  • Just 21 seconds later, Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) took a crossing pass from Lewis on the right side and scored her fourth goal of the season. Kaiser was also credited with an assist on the score.
  • Hannah Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) made it 4-1 in the 58th minute when her shot from 30 yards out ricocheted off the crossbar and into the goal. Lewis was tabbed with her third assist of the game on the goal.
  • In the 64th minute, Cekella took a pass from Hannah Hays (Butler, Pa./Butler) and tapped it over to Kaiser in the middle of the box, who beat the goalkeeper to her left. It marked the first multi-goal game of Kaiser's career.
  • Gannon held Mansfield to two shots for the rest of the match. 

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon finished the game with a 29-7 advantage in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Cekella and Hays finished the game with four shots apiece.
  • 29 Lady Knights saw time in the match.
  • All three of Gannon's goalkeepers saw time in the game.
  • Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) was credited with her 10th win of the season after making two saves and keeping Mansfield off the board in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Additionally, Hannah Pufpaff (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Saint Mary's of Lancaster) made two saves, while Maggie Wolodkevich (West Coxsackie, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens Central) made one stop in her first career game

  • The Lady Knights ranked fourth in the initial NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released Wednesday afternoon.
  • Gannon was listed among others receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
  • The Lady Knights can clinch its seventh straight PSAC Tournament spot with a Clarion loss or tie at California (Pa.) Wednesday evening.
  • Lewis entered the match with three career assists in 32 matches, but dished out a career-high three against the Mountaineers.
  • Lewis has already accumulated 51 career points, which is eighth all-time at Gannon. Her 27 points this season is tied with Mani Brueckner (2014) and Amanda Sharbaugh (2009) for eighth in Gannon single-season history.
  • Kaiser entered the match with one career goal, but scored a career-high two in the win, including the game-winner.
  • Kaiser also had a career-high five points in the game.
  • Cekella's three points is a career-high. 
  • Manczka has now appeared in 68 games over her four-year career, which is the 19th-most in Gannon history. 
  • Gannon is undefeated in seven home matches this season.
  • The Lady Knights scored a season-high five goals in the match.
