HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon didn't manage a shot until the 21st minute while going into wind gusts that ranged between 20-30 miles per hour. However, the Lady Knights converted when they finally got a chance.
  • Sophomore Emily Cekella (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) started the scoring play when her initial shot was blocked. Senior Hannah Manczka (Fairview, Pa./McDowell) gathered the loose ball and played it ahead to Lewis, who scored for a 1-0 lead at the 20:15 mark.
  • Gannon managed a 5-3 edge in shots during the first half despite playing into the wind. Neither team was able to score after Lewis' goal as the Lady Knights went into the break with their one-goal advantage.
  • Lewis opened a more offensive-oriented second half with her second goal 6:12 into the final stanza. The sophomore beat her defender one-on-one, before scoring into the lower, right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
  • Mercyhurst didn't fade though and cut the deficit in half a little over 10 minutes later. Maya Fanazini scored from 25 yards out off a pass from Maya Bauer to keep the outcome in question.
  • Gannon countered 2:06 later with an insurance goal that put the match out of reach. Lewis' initial header off a corner kick from Manczka was saved, but junior Nicole Felice (Cleveland, Ohio/Laurel School) put the rebound past a crowded group of defenders and into the net for a 3-1 advantage in the 64th minute.
  • Mercyhurst's best chance the rest of the way came during the 81st minute when Fanazini riffled a shot from close range in search of her second goal, but senior goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea (Vaughan, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc) was up to the task with a diving save to her left.
  • The visitors were unable to get another shot off the rest of the way, before Gannon celebrated a 3-1 victory.
