  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's volleyball team put two student-athletes in double digits in kills and rolled to a 3-0 sweep Saturday afternoon at California (Pa.) to complete a weekend road sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest Division opponents. GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was tight with ties at one, two, three and six.
  • Gannon followed with an 11-4 run to grab a 17-10 lead. Senior Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and sophomore Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded two kills each during the run.
  • California (Pa.) was never able to get closer than five points the rest of the way.
  • Leading 19-14, Gannon clinched the first set with a 6-1 run that resulted in a 25-15 victory. Five of those points came off Vulcan errors.
  • Much like the opening set, the second stanza was tight early. However, Gannon snapped a 3-3 tie with an 8-3 blitz. Another Ansec kill followed by a service ace from sophomore Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) gave the Lady Knights an 11-6 advantage.
  • California (Pa.) slowly chipped away and pulled within one point on five different occasions before tying the set at 22.
  • However, a Cal hitting error pushed Gannon back in front 23-22. Senior Anne-Mari Kaur (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Lillekula Upper Secondary School) then made the score 24-22 with a kill.
  • After a ball-handling error cut the deficit to 24-23, another Cal hitting error gave Gannon a 25-23 win in set two.
  • The beginning of the third set was much like the first two with tied scores at one, two and three.
  • Kills by freshman Ashley Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and Ansec combined with a Cal bad set manufactured a mini 3-0 run to give Gannon a 6-3 lead.
  • The Lady Knights' advantage sat at 9-6, before another 3-0 blitz. Kills by Ansec and Leitshuh preceded another Cal ball-handling error for a 12-6 Gannon lead.
  • It was the start of an 11-3 onslaught that pushed the visitors' lead to 20-9.
  • Cal reversed the momentum and out-scored Gannon 10-6 the rest of the way, but it wasn't enough to hold off a 25-19 Lady Knight third-set win to clinch the overall victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon got the best of California (Pa.) in hitting percentage (.141-.077), kills (36-33), assists (34-33) and service aces (3-0).
  • The Vulcans held a slight 79-77 edge in digs.
  • Both teams finished with seven blocks.
  • Ansec led the Gannon offensive attack with 12 kills, hitting .289 with only one error in 38 attempts.
  • Leitshuh recorded a double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 16 digs.
  • Junior Carolyn Knollman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) saw the majority of time at setter, dishing out 31 assists while adding 14 digs.
  • Five Lady Knights reached double digits in digs.
  • Senior Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) produced 15 digs in her libero role.
  • Senior Maggie Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) finished with 10 digs and a team-best four blocks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon extended its win streak to eight matches with a weekend road sweep that included stops at Seton Hill and California (Pa.). It represents the program's longest win streak since winning 14 straight October 15-December 2, 2016.
  • The Lady Knights produced their 11th sweep of the season.
  • Gannon posted its first victory at California (Pa.) since October 27, 2012 after three straight road losses in the series.
  • The Lady Knights recorded their first road sweep in the series since joining the PSAC in 2008.

  • Knollman produced her 10th double-double of the campaign.
