THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Gannon 93, California (Pa.) 88 (ot)
  • Records: Gannon (6-5, 4-3 PSAC), California (Pa.) (3-10, 0-7 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Hammermill Center (Gary Miller Court)
  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team was unable to hold onto a 17-point second-half lead, but responded in overtime to hold off a pesky California (Pa.) squad 93-88 Tuesday night at the Hammermill Center behind junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside)'s first career double-double.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The contest remained closed for the majority of the first half until Gannon created some breathing room late with the contest's first true run. Leading 28-26, Jackson buried a three-pointer and senior Marcus Jones (Brantford, Ontario/Athlete Institute) hit two free throws for a 33-26 edge with 6:15 showing on the clock.
  • Back-to-back triples by junior Jair Green (Williamstown, N.J./Paul VI) and Jackson pushed the lead into double digits at 42-30. After a Cal basket, freshman Jimmy Berger (Medina, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) came through with a long-range bomb and junior Gerrell Williams (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) converted an old-fashion three-point play for a 45-30 lead with 2:07 left in the half. In all, it was a 12-2 run over the span of two minutes and 54 seconds.
  • Williams later drained a jumper as time expired to give Gannon a 49-33 advantage at the break.
  • The Golden Knights' biggest lead of the evening was 56-39 following another Jackson three-pointer with 13:50 remaining.
  • The difference was still 17 points midway through the second half when Cal began its comeback. The Vulcans scored five straight points to pull within 60-48.
  • Consecutive triples brought Cal within single digits at 66-59 with 6:03 to play. Two more three-pointers by Robel Teckle capped a 24-9 run, cutting the deficit to 69-67 at the 3:36 mark.
  • Gannon pushed its lead up to 73-69, before a lay-up and Teckle's fifth three-pointer of the second half gave Cal a 74-73 advantage with 1:13 to play. It represented the Vulcans' first lead since 15-13.
  • Jackson was fouled on Gannon's next possession and calmly sank two free throws to regain the lead. The Golden Knights' advantage was 77-75 when Rashawn Browne's lay-up with 12 ticks left created the game's sixth tie.
  • Gannon missed a three-pointer and difficult tip try at the buzzer that forced overtime.
  • The Golden Knights led the entire overtime session, beginning with a Green three-pointer on the first possession.
  • After Jackson drained his fifth three-pointer to give Gannon an 87-82 lead, Cal fouled for the final 66 seconds. The Golden Knights did just enough at the line, hitting 6-of-12 free throws to post a 93-88 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Jackson led the Gannon scoring attack with his first career double-double, registering career-highs in points (28) and rebounds (10). He also added six assists and three steals while finishing 5-of-8 from behind the arc.
  • Williams came off the bench to score 15 points.
  • Junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) chipped in 11 points each. Miraud missed a double-double by one rebound for the second time this season.
  • Berger dished out a career-high 14 assists with only two turnovers in 42 minutes at point guard. He also produced seven points and three rebounds.
  • Gannon shot 50 percent (32-64) from the field, including a 62.1-percent (18-29) clip during the first half and 66.7-percent (4-6) effort in overtime. The Golden Knights shot 45.5 percent (10-22) from three-point range where they were 7-of-8 during the opening 20 minutes. The squad shot 54.3 percent (19-35) from the free throw line.
  • Cal's Teckle topped all scorers with 31 points, aided by seven three-pointers.
  • Luka Andjusic and Jay Tucker followed with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
  • California (Pa.) shot 53.2 percent (33-62) from the floor, including a red-hot 60.7-percent (17-28) effort during the second-half comeback. The Vulcans shot 37.1 percent (13-35) from behind the arc and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the charity stripe.
  • The game featured six ties and four lead changes.

  • Gannon was playing its first home game since December 10 against East Stroudsburg, a span of 24 days.

  • Berger's 14 assists were the most by a Gannon player since at least the 2001-02 campaign.
  • Gannon and Cal have needed an extra session three times during their last five encounters. The average margin of victory during the last eight games in the series is 4.6 points.
  • The Golden Knights' 32 field goals were their most since making 39 during an overtime game at Edinboro on December 16, 2015.
  • Gannon reached double digits in three-pointers made for the second time in the last four games while its 22 three-point attempts were its most since matching that number during an 80-67 home victory against Mansfield on January 6, 2016.
  • The Golden Knights' 26 assists were their most since having 27 during a 94-62 victory against Malone in the 2011 Porreco Cup semifinals.
  • Gannon's 93 points and the 181 combined points were the most in a game since a 105-102 overtime loss at Edinboro on December 16, 2015. Both figures were the most during a home contest since a 103-100 overtime loss to Seton Hill in the 2011 Porreco Cup championship game.
