Gannon Women's Basketball Falls Short in Upset Bid over Indiana (Pa.), 62-57 (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Indiana (Pa.) 62, Gannon 57

  • The Short Story: A late fourth quarter spurt by Indiana (Pa.) thwarted an upset bid by the Gannon Lady Knights on Saturday (Jan. 28) at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights led by as many as 16 but couldn't hang on, Indiana (Pa.) won, 62-57.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lady Knights controlled the opening quarter against the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks. Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) began the scoring with an and-one at the 8:25 mark.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) added a layup and Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Knights an 8-2 advantage four minutes into the game.
  • Gannon owned its largest lead of the quarter on two Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) free throws with 32 seconds remaining, 16-9.
  • The Lady Knights continued its strong showing in the second quarter. Gannon opened up the lead to its largest of the game at the 6:03 mark, 28-12.
  • Indiana (Pa.) began to claw its way back. The Crimson Hawks finished the final six minutes on a 13-0 run.
  • Gannon went to the locker room with a 28-25 edge.
  • The Crimson Hawks grabbed their first lead of the game at the 9:03 mark of the third quarter (29-28) with a layup from Brittany Robinson.
  • Mitchell responded on the other end with a bucket of her own. Gannon reclaimed a 30-29 lead.
  • The Lady Knights and Crimson Hawks saw five lead changes and four ties in the third quarter.
  • Indiana (Pa.) went to the fourth quarter up 44-42.
  • Mitchell began the fourth quarter with a layup and Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) added a free throw to put Gannon back up by one point, 45-44, at the 7:45 mark.
  • With the game tied at 48, Carolyn Appleby found net to put the Crimson Hawks up 50-48 at the 5:19 mark.
  • Down 54-50, Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a three-pointer with 1:43 remaining to cut the deficit to 54-53. Indiana (Pa.) came back down the floor and picked up two points on free throws by Appleby.
  • The Crimson Hawks hit eight free throws in the final two minutes to pull out the comeback, 62-57.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Mitchell led the Lady Knights with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She also had three rebounds and two assists.
  • Saunders added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Knights.
  • The Lady Knights out-rebounded Indiana (Pa.) 35-27.
  • Gannon was 20-of-45 (44.4 percent) from the field, while the Crimson Hawks were 21-of-54 (38.9 percent) from the floor.
  • The Lady Knights outscored Indiana (Pa.) 17-9 off the bench.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Saturday's game was part of the 2017 Gannon Hall of Fame Doubleheader at the Hammermill Center.
  • Indiana (Pa.) controlled the first matchup of the season, 71-48, on Dec. 30 in Indiana, Pa.
  • Gannon outrebounded its 11th opponent this season (35-27).
