Mitchell's Free Throws in Final Seconds Lift Gannon Over Slippery Rock, 64-63 (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 64, Slippery Rock 63

  • Location: Erie, Pa. – Hammermill Center
  • The Short Story: Two Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) free throws with 4.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter completed a last second comeback by the Gannon Lady Knights as they defeated Slippery Rock, 64-63, on Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Slippery Rock knocked down two buckets in the first minute and a half of the game to lead 5-0; the five-point lead was their largest of the game.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) got the scoring party started for the Lady Knights with a back-door cut and pass from Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark).
  • After the 5-0 start, Gannon outscored the Rock 18-9 in the first quarter. Gannon finished out the first ten-minute segment up, 18-14.
  • Gannon inched out to a 26-18 lead at the 5:23 mark of the second quarter after Rourke went to the line, earning two shots. The eight-point lead was the largest of the game for the Lady Knights.
  • SRU went on an 11-0 run after the Rourke free throws to climb back, 29-26.
  • Gannon scored five points in the final 49 seconds of the half with a Rourke layup and three-pointer. The Lady Knights led 31-29 at the break.
  • The Lady Knights improved to 3-3 this season when leading at the half.
  • The third quarter began with Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) adding a bucket. Gannon ensued with a 6-2 run to take a 37-31 lead by the 7:03 mark.
  • The Lady Knights had four six-point leads in the third quarter but Slippery Rock responded after each bucket. Gannon went to the fourth quarter up, 49-44.
  • Up 51-46, Krista Pietropola began to chip away at the Gannon lead. She knocked down a three-pointer at the 6:30 mark to pull Slippery Rock within two and then buried another three-pointer on the Rock's next possession to put Slippery Rock up one.
  • It was Slippery Rock's first lead since the 49 second mark of the second quarter as they went up, 52-51 with 5:55 left in the game.
  • Gannon responded, the Lady Knights would claw back to take a four-point lead, 59-55, on a Mitchell three-pointer with 2:46 remaining.
  • SRU's Pietropola cut the deficit to two points on the Rock's next possession with a layup.
  • A Gannon turnover put the Rock back on the offensive and Lexi Carpenter hit a triple-try to give SRU a one-point lead, 60-59, with just 1:19 remaining.
  • Another Gannon turnover set up a crushing three-pointer by Mallory Heinle, putting the Rock up 63-59 with the clock running down, just 40 seconds left.
  • Mitchell was fouled on Gannon's next possession. She converted one of her two free throws, cutting the lead to a one possession game, 63-60, with 28 seconds remaining.
  • Slippery Rock inbounded the ball and advanced it up the floor. Lexi Carpenter passed half court where she was trapped by Gannon's defense. Carpenter attempted to call timeout but the Rock didn't have any remaining.
  • The result was a technical foul. Mitchell went to the line and converted both free throws with the clocked stopped at 21 seconds. Gannon trailed by just one, 63-62.
  • The ball also went over to the Lady Knights on the technical foul and Gannon would have one final shot to take the lead.
  • After a Gannon timeout, Mitchell drove from the top of the key and was fouled with just four seconds remaining.
  • Mitchell went to the line and sank both free throws. Gannon led, 64-63.
  • A last second attempt by Slippery Rock sailed left of the rim and the Lady Knights' bench rushed on to the court to celebrate with the rest of the team.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) led the Lady Knights with 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) tallied her first double-double of her career with 13 points a career-best 10 assists. She also added six rebounds, tying a career-best in rebounding.
  • Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) poured in a career-high 13 points off the Lady Knights' bench. Herbert's 13 points were in just 15 minutes of game action.
  • Gannon outscored Slippery Rock 30-16 in the paint.
  • There were four ties and seven lead changes in the game.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon improved to 21-4 at home all-time against Slippery Rock.
  • The Lady Knights tied a season-high with 18 assists in the game; it's also the second-straight game of 18 assists.
  • Gannon's 23-of-49 (46.9 percent) shooting from the field was its second-best performance of the season.
  • The Lady Knights held Lexi Carpenter to just 14 points, she came into the game with the 10th-best scoring average in the country at 20.4 points per contest. 
     
UP NEXT
  • On Saturday, Gannon welcomes Indiana (Pa.) for the second matchup of the season.
  • The women's game is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the men's game around 3:30 p.m. 
  • The Crimson Hawks lead the all-time series, 20-16.

The group includes men's basketball standout Darryl Freeman '91; wrestling great Doug Joseph; softball standout Jackie Mozga '99; men's soccer great Colin Petersen '01; football standout Sterling Pierce '03; women's soccer great Amanda (Sharbaugh) Spaeder '12, '13M; women's basketball standout Tonya (Treharne) Kline '89 and men's basketball great Mel Witherspoon '68. Joe Mattis '69 will be inducted as the 2017 Distinguished Service Award recipient.
