  • The Short Story: Great pitching by four Golden Knights and a walk-off sacrifice fly helped the Gannon baseball team sweep Seton Hill Saturday afternoon in the final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division regular-season doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium. The Golden Knights out-pitched the Griffins 2-1 in the opener, before walking off a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Seton Hill struck first with a single run during the top of the second inning. It proved to be the only run it would score the entire afternoon.
  • Gannon flipped the score during the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Knights loaded the bases with a single up the middle by junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic), a walk to senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) and a single through the left side by redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).
  • Sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) followed with an RBI single to right field that tied the game at one. Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) then barely missed a grand slam, but still drove home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Seton Hill's best opportunity to tie the game came in the fifth with Zac Heide doubled to right center with two outs, but redshirt junior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) escaped the jam by forcing clean-up hitter Matt Malacane to foul out down the left field line.
  • Jackson set down the Griffins in order during the last two innings to preserve the 2-1 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Five different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Jackson improved to 5-2 with a three-hit complete game, striking out six and walking two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.
  • Seton Hill is tabbed fourth in the NCBWA Atlantic Regional Poll and fifth in the NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • Jackson tossed his third complete game of the season and 14th of his career.
  • Wiesen moved into Gannon's all-time top five in stolen bases with 56, tying John Casio (1994-96) and Adam Foust (1998-99).

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon and Seton Hill battled through six scoreless innings, but it wasn't due to the lack of scoring opportunities.
  • The Griffins left 10 runners on base through the first six innings, including eight who were left stranding in scoring position.
  • Junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) stranded runners on second and third with a strikeout in the second. The Griffins had runners on second and third with one out in the third, but Colosi escaped with a strikeout and ground-out.
  • With Seton Hill runners on the corners and one out in the fourth, Colosi held the runner at third with a ground-out and left two stranded in scoring position with a strikeout.
  • Heide tried to get into scoring position during the top of the seventh when he ripped a ball down the right field line. However, Wiesen played the ball perfectly off the wall and threw a strike that erased Heide without a slide at second base.
  • Gannon then ended the game during the bottom of the frame. Senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on a single by sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville).
  • Joe Shaffer was called out of the bullpen at that point. On his second pitch, Restuccia hit a fly ball to deep right field that was dropped by the right fielder, setting off a walk-off celebration. Restuccia was credited with an RBI sacrifice fly as Beer would have scored easily on the catch regardless.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Cox finished 2-for-3.
  • Colosi, freshman Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) and junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) combined on a five-hit shutout.
  • Colosi logged the first four innings, allowing three hits while striking out six.
  • Yough surrendered only one hit in 2 1/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.
  • DiPaolo improved to 5-1 after getting the final two outs of the seventh inning.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.

  • The Golden Knights won their first 1-0 decision since shutting out Findlay at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida on March 1, 2015.
  • Gannon swept its third consecutive home doubleheader.
  • The Golden Knights have swept 10 twinbills this season.
  • The four combined runs were the fewest by two teams in a doubleheader involving Gannon since March 5, 2014 at the Russ-Matt Invitational. The Golden Knights dropped the first game against Findlay 1-0, before winning the second contest 3-0.
  • Cox recorded his 17th multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Wiesen tied Kyle Harpster (2009-12) for fourth place all-time at Gannon with his 57th career stolen base.
  • Gannon completed the regular season with the most overall (30) and conference (18) victories in school history.

  • Saturday's walk-off victory was Gannon's fourth of the season.
  • Gannon had three pitchers combine on a shutout for the first time since April 5, 2013 during a 1-0 home victory that took 14 innings against Indiana (Pa.). Aaron Cox, Shayne Herold and Jeff Jones combined to shut out the Crimson Hawks that day.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon has a full week to prepare of the 2016 PSAC Tournament scheduled for May 8-11 at Pullman Park in Butler, Pennsylvania.
  • The Golden Knights will be the PSAC Western Division's third seed if Pitt-Johnstown defeats California (Pa.) during the second game of their Saturday doubleheader. That scenario pits Gannon versus PSAC Eastern Division second seed West Chester during the opening day.
  • Gannon will be the PSAC Western Division's fourth seed if California (Pa.) defeats Pitt-Johnstown during the second game of their Saturday doubleheader. That scenario pits Gannon versus PSAC Eastern Division champion Millersville during the opening day. The Marauders are ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II with a 43-4 overall record.
