Gannon Softball Team Still Alive at PSAC Tournament Before Rain Halts Action

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division regular-season champion Bloomsburg Thursday afternoon at the PSAC Tournament in Quakertown, Pennsylvania to grab a 4-0 lead against Kutztown before rain forced the elimination game to be suspended in the top of the fourth inning. The contest will resume Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Bloomsburg grabbed a 2-0 lead with single runs during the first and third innings.
  • Gannon had its best scoring chance during the bottom of the fifth inning. The frame started with a single by senior Rachel deGuia (Canal Fulton, Ohio/Northwest) and double by freshman Kherrin Morgan (Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda). A walk to sophomore Nathaly Pacheco (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower) loaded the bases with two outs, but Bloomsburg starting pitcher Mallory Tomaschik escaped the jam with a strikeout.
  • The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh and closed out a 3-0 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • deGuia, Morgan and junior Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa./Fox Chapel) recorded hits for Gannon.
  • Junior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) went the distance on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits. She struck out two and walked two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bloomsburg is ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • The Huskies won the PSAC Central Division regular-season title.
  • Gumbita tossed her 22nd complete game of the campaign and 45th of her career.
  • Thursday's Gannon-Bloomsburg game was played in cold conditions as temperatures hovered around 50 degrees under cloudy skies.
  • Gumbita moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 in inning pitched, surpassing Wendy Herberger (1992-95) with 355 innings pitched.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • After two scoreless innings, Gannon plated four runs during a rainy third inning. Pacheco drove home the first run with an RBI double to left center.
  • Senior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) later cleared the bases with a two-out, three-run double to right center that gave the Lady Knights a 4-0 lead.
  • Gumbita retired the Golden Bears during the bottom of the inning, before the game was suspended due to rain.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Archambeault was 2-for-3 with three RBIs through three innings.
  • Gumbita started her second game of the day, shutting Kutztown out on four hits over three innings. She struck out three and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kutztown is ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • The first two innings were played under cloudy skies with temperatures around 50 degrees, before the entire third inning was played in rain.
  • Gannon started the game only 30 minutes removed from its loss to Bloomsburg.
  • The Gannon-Kutztown winner will be one of four remaining teams in the PSAC Tournament.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon and Kutztown will resume its suspended game Friday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
  • The loser will be eliminated while the winner will immediately play the Lock Haven-Millersville winner at 12 noon.
  • The winner of the 12 noon match-up will play a third game against the Bloomsburg-California (Pa.) loser at 4 p.m.
