Gannon Softball Team Upsets No. 12 West Chester Behind Long Balls and Stellar Pitching

  • The Short Story: The Gannon softball team opened the 2016 PSAC Tournament Wednesday afternoon with a 3-1 upset of No. 12 West Chester behind a stellar pitching performance by junior Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and pair of long balls by senior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and sophomore Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • After four scoreless innings, Gannon forged ahead with a pair of long balls during the top of the fifth inning. Archambeault initially gave the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run to left field.
  • Two outs later, freshman Kellyn Perich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) reached on a dropped fly ball and Salerno drilled the first pitch she saw over the fence in right center for a 3-0 advantage.
  • West Chester got on the board during its half of the fifth when Sara Ercolani hit a solo homer to right field.
  • Gumbita went to work after the home run, retiring six straight hitters until allowing a two-out single during the bottom of the seventh inning. Gumbita then struck out Sarah Walasavage to end the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Salerno went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs out of the lead-off spot.
  • Gumbita went the distance on the mound, allowing one run on seven hits. She struck out six and walked two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • West Chester is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region.
  • The Golden Rams are No. 12 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 20 Poll.
  • Gannon defeated its highest-ranked opponent since posting a 5-3 victory against No. 12 Kutztown at the Salem Invitational on March 22, 2008.
  • The Lady Knights' last win against a team ranked higher came via a 5-2 decision against No. 5 SIU Edwardsville at the West Liberty State Tournament on April 2, 2006.
  • Wednesday's game was played in cold conditions as temperatures hovered around 50 degrees under cloudy skies.
  • Salerno hit her second home run of the season while Archambeault blasted her first.
  • Gumbita tossed her 21st complete game of the campaign and 44th of her career.

  • PSAC officials announced Wednesday evening that Thursday's start times have been moved up to 10 a.m., 12 noon and 2 p.m. in an attempt to beat forecasted rain later in the afternoon.
  • Gannon defeated West Chester in the PSAC Tournament for the second consecutive season, posting an 8-4 victory in last year's championship semifinals.

  • Gannon continues play in the PSAC Tournament championship bracket Thursday, April 28 against Bloomsburg at 12 noon.
  • The winner advances to the championship semifinals and will be done for the day.
