Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Moves Back to .500 Mark with 16-13 Victory at Shippensburg

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team overcame an early 6-3 deficit to post a 16-13 victory Friday afternoon at Shippensburg. The win moved the Lady Knights back to the .500 mark at 5-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened a 3-2 lead after goals from sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy), junior Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and sophomore Kierstyn Haight (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights).
  • Shippensburg responded with four consecutive scores to assume a 6-3 lead with 13:20 left in the first half.
  • Gannon then countered with five straight goals to forge back ahead and would never trail again. Freshman Kayla Shields (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) tied the contest at six, before junior Tessa Mitchell's (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) second goal of the run gave the Lady Knights a 7-6 advantage.
  • Leading 8-7, Shields buried two more shots to complete a natural hat trick and extend Gannon's lead to 10-7 with 3:51 left in the first half.
  • Shippensburg managed one more score before the final horn and went to the intermission trailing 10-8.
  • Neither team was able to generate more than two consecutive goals during the second half.
  • Shippensburg opened the final 30 minutes with a 4-2 run, tying the contest at 12 on Ali Harclerode's third goal of the match with 23:12 remaining.
  • King answered 22 seconds later, regaining the lead for Gannon with an unassisted score.
  • The home squad pulled within 14-13 at the 19:58 mark, but Gannon held the Ship scoreless the rest of the way.
  • Senior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) and Mitchell added insurance goals during the final 17 minutes to ice a 16-13 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Shippensburg out-shot Gannon 39-30, including a 24-10 edge during the second half.
  • The Raiders also held advantages in ground balls (34-33), draw controls (17-14) and fewest turnovers (29-33).
  • King and Mitchell led both teams in scoring with four goals each. King also won 10 of Gannon's 14 draw controls.
  • Shields completed the Lady Knights' trio of hat tricks with three goals off the bench.
  • Hilker and Haight added two scores each while Mozingo chipped in one goal.
  • Sophomore Kaitie Babiarz (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek), Haight and King kept the offense rolling with two assists apiece.
  • Sophomore Hannah Sinsebox (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), sophomore Jessica Lambert (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia), Haight and freshman Kat Martinelli (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) led the defensive unit with four ground balls each.
  • Martinelli made her fourth consecutive start in goal, recording 13 saves. Eleven of those stops came during the final 30 minutes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon was opening a two-match weekend road trip that continues Saturday afternoon at No. 9 West Chester.
  • The Lady Knights were playing their first road match since March 15, a span of 17 days.
  • Gannon scored a season-high 16 goals, representing its most goals in a road affair since posting an 18-11 victory at Shippensburg on April 4, 2015. The 29 combined goals were also the most since last year's road match against the Raiders.
  • The Lady Knights also recorded season-highs in assists (9), points (25) and ground balls (33).
  • Gannon generated its most goals, assists and points since having the same exact numbers during a 16-11 home victory against Kutztown in last year's regular-season finale on April 25, 2015.
  • The Lady Knights' ground ball figure was their highest since having 39 during an 18-7 home win against Lake Erie on March 19, 2015. It was their most on the road since securing 36 at Lock Haven on April 22, 2009.
  • King recorded her fourth hat trick of the season and 11th of her career. She reached double digits in draw controls for the second time this year and third time in her career.
  • Mitchell also generated her fourth hat trick of the campaign, giving her 13 during her career.
  • Shields scored one goal during the first nine matches, before erupting for three at Shippensburg.
  • Sinsebox set a career-high in ground balls while Lambert and Haight tied their career-bests.
  • Martinelli posted career-highs in saves and ground balls.
