Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Falls at No. 13 Florida Southern

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: No. 13 Florida Southern out-shot Gannon 37-12 and used a 7-0 run early in the first half to post a 13-4 victory Wednesday night in women's lacrosse non-conference action at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon was the first to get on the board, scoring 2:25 into the contest on an unassisted goal by sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy).
  • Florida Southern answered with the tying score a little over a minute later which started a string of seven consecutive goals.
  • Kendall Kerge's tally with 14:22 left in the first half capped the run.
  • Gannon and Florida Southern split the final four goals of the opening stanza. The Lady Knights' scores came off the sticks of juniors Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston). The latter goal happened with 12 seconds left on the clock, sending the Lady Knights into halftime with a 9-3 deficit.
  • In contrast to the first half, the final 30 minutes was a low-scoring and defensive affair with the two clubs combining for five goals.
  • Florida Southern opened the second half with three straight goals to create a 12-3 lead.
  • Senior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) accounted for Gannon's final tally at the 6:39 mark, before Florida Southern added an insurance goal with 3:03 to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Florida Southern out-shot Gannon 37-12, including a 21-5 edge during the first half.
  • The Mocs also held advantages in ground balls (27-20) and fewest turnovers (24-37).
  • Gannon topped Florida Southern in saves (16-4) and draw controls (11-8).
  • Mitchell, King, Hilker and Mozingo scored one goal each for the Lady Knights.
  • King had a full resume with a team-high four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
  • Mitchell won a team-best five draw controls and picked up two ground balls.
  • Mozingo chipped in three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • Sophomore Alexis Strouse (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) recorded 16 saves during her first start of the season between the pipes.
