Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Falls in PSAC Opener at Indiana (Pa.)

  • The Short Story: The Indiana (Pa.) women's lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals of the match and never looked back en route to an 18-5 victory against Gannon Tuesday afternoon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for both programs at George P. Miller Stadium.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Carissa Smith, Kim Hooven and Katie Martyn scored two goals each to spur an opening 10-0 Indiana (Pa.) run during the first 19 minutes.
  • Sophomore Kierstyn Haight (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) finally got Gannon on the board with an unassisted goal at the 8:20 mark of the first half.
  • Haight's free position score with 4:33 remaining in the first half was Gannon's only other goal during the opening 30 minutes.
  • IUP's Sara Harshman added a free position goal with 10 seconds left to send the Crimson Hawks into the intermission with a 13-2 advantage.
  • The second half was played at a much lower scoring pace as IUP produced a 5-3 scoring difference during the final 30 minutes.
  • The home squad netted the first three goals of the second half to assume a 16-2 edge with 17:33 to play.
  • Gannon was able to score three of the final five goals. Senior Kelsey Bright (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo), junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) accounted for the scores.

GAME NOTES
  • Indiana (Pa.) won every statistical category. The Crimson Hawks held advantages in shots (31-13), ground balls (21-16), draw controls (15-9) and fewest turnovers (13-18).
  • Haight was the only Lady Knight with multiple goals. Bright, Mitchell and King chipped in one score each.
  • Both King and sophomore Kaitie Babiarz (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek) won four draw controls and secured two ground balls.
  • Redshirt sophomore Hanna Magee (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) turned away eight shots between the pipes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's two-match win streak ended with Tuesday's setback.
  • Indiana (Pa.) defeated Gannon for the fifth consecutive match after the Lady Knights won the first 15 match-ups in the all-time series.
  • Babiarz won a career-high four draw controls.
