  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team had to work overtime twice Saturday afternoon against the University of Findlay. Redshirt freshman Nate Cardy's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) two-out, two-run single in the eighth helped the Golden Knights post a 4-2 victory in the opener at Mercy Field in Toledo, Ohio. Findlay bounced back with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon struck first during the opener. Cardy drew a lead-off walk in the fourth, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and scored on sophomore Kyle Cox's (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) double to right field.
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 2-0 with the same formula in the fifth. Junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) and scored on redshirt senior Mark DeVita's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) two-out single up the middle.
  • Findlay rallied to force extra innings with single runs during the fifth and seventh innings. The Oilers tied the game without the aid of a hit. Two walks and a wild pitch placed runners at second and third with two outs. Junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) appeared to end the game with a strikeout of Josh Schwerer, but a wild pitch on the swinging strike allowed the tying run to score. After the throw back to the plate got away, the Oilers tried to score the winning run from second base. However, DeVita was backing up the play and threw home for the final out.
  • DeVita and senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) reached base in the eighth with a walk and single. After a double steal, both runners came home on Cardy's two-out single.
  • DiPaolo then set Findlay down in order during the bottom of the eighth to secure the 4-2 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • DeVita, Cox and Restuccia recorded two hits each.
  • Redshirt junior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) started on the mound, logging six innings. He allowed one run on four hits, striking out three and walking two.
  • DiPaolo picked up the victory with two relief innings, surrendering only one unearned run while striking out two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights won their first extra-inning game since a 1-0 eight-inning victory against Findlay March 1, 2015 at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.
  • Cardy recorded his team-best eighth multiple-RBI game of the season.
  • DeVita and Cox produced their seventh and sixth multiple-hit games, respectively.
  • Cox, DeVita, Beer and Cardy all recorded a hit for the fourth consecutive game.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon crossed the plate first again with a pair of runs during the top of the fourth inning. Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) singled and Beer was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, both scored on Benack's two-out single to left field.
  • Findlay rallied to tie the game during the bottom of the seventh inning with a bases-loaded walk and RBI ground-out.
  • After Gannon went down in order during the top of the eighth, Findlay received a one-out walk during the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles from Jordan Garcia and Christion Smith followed to produce the walk-off victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Wiesen, Benack and redshirt freshman John Davis (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded Gannon's only three hits.
  • Sophomore David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) went six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights played their third extra-inning game of the season.
  • Benack recorded his third multiple-RBI game of the campaign.
  • Gannon scored first for the 14th time in 16 games.
  • The Golden Knights went extra innings during both games of a doubleheader for the first time since April 15, 2012 at Seton Hill.
  • Gannon is off to its best 16-game start since at least the 1999 campaign. Game-by-game archives are incomplete prior to that season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action Tuesday, March 15 against Lake Erie at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • The home opener will be a single nine-inning game with a first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday's contest against Lake Erie was added after Sunday's doubleheader against Findlay was cancelled due to expected inclement weather in Toledo, Ohio.
  • Gannon and Lake Erie tried to play twice last year, but were rained out both times.
  • The two programs last played April 17-18, 2010 when they split a four-game series in Painesville, Ohio.
