Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Wins Second Straight with Road Rally at Lake Erie

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team overcame a 10-6 deficit by scoring seven of the last nine goals to earn a 13-12 come-from-behind victory Friday night at Lake Erie. Junior Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) shattered her previous career-high while leading both sides with six goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mozingo gave the fans a brief glimpse of what was coming early, scoring 1:35 into the match for a 1-0 lead. She later snapped a 2-2 tie with consecutive unassisted goals for a 4-2 lead 10:36 into the contest.
  • Lake Erie countered with three consecutive goals that started a half-ending 4-1 run. Anastasia Crawford's tally with 4:02 remaining sent the Storm into the intermission with a 6-5 lead.
  • The home squad continued the momentum after the break by scoring the first three goals of the second half to assume a 9-5 advantage.
  • Mozingo produced her fourth goal of the match at the 26:01 mark and Lake Erie responded with a Taylor Mathis score for a 10-6 lead with 25:11 to play.
  • That's when Gannon kicked it into overdrive. The Lady Knights scored five straight goals to explode past the Storm 11-10. Four different players found the back of the net during the run.
  • Junior Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) tied the match at 10 off an assist from sophomore Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) at the 16:42 mark.
  • Senior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) then gave Gannon its first lead in 31 minutes and 52 seconds, scoring her first goal of the affair off another King assist.
  • After Lake Erie forged the sixth tie of the evening with 10:42 remaining, Mozingo and Mitchell produced back-to-back goals in the span of 18 seconds for a 13-11 advantage.
  • Lake Erie battled back again with another score at the 3:10 mark, but was unable to score the tying goal. The Storm had possession late, before junior Ali Owczarzak (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) caused a turnover with 47 seconds left and the Lady Knights ran out the clock.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon produced advantages in shots (27-22), draw controls (17-9) and fewest fouls (17-26).
  • Lake Erie won the ground ball battle 17-14.
  • Both teams committed 10 turnovers each.
  • Mozingo led the Gannon scoring attack for the second consecutive match, leading both sides with six goals and two draw controls.
  • Both King and Mitchell recorded hat tricks. King finished with three goals, three assists, four draw controls and two ground balls.

  • The Lady Knights are 3-2 after five matches for the fourth consecutive season.
