  • The Short Story: A complete-game shutout by redshirt junior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) and game-winning RBI triple by redshirt sophomore Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) helped the Gannon baseball team open play at the Russ-Matt Invitational Sunday afternoon with a sweep of Cleary (Mich.) by scores of 8-0 and 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • After three scoreless innings, Gannon broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) started the blitz by driving in senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson) with an RBI single. Sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) followed with a sacrifice fly that scored redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) for a 2-0 lead.
  • Vargo and redshirt senior Bobby Roach (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added back-to-back two-out RBI doubles, before senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) cleaned up the inning with an RBI single.
  • Gannon tacked on another run during the fifth inning when Cox doubled to right center, stole third base and scored on Vargo's two-out RBI single.
  • The Golden Knights added two more insurance runs for good measure in the sixth. Roach scored the first run on a passed ball. Wiesen crossed the plate with the final run on a sacrifice fly by Beer.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Wiesen, DeVita, Cardy, Vargo and Roach recorded two hits each.
  • Roach scored twice while Vargo produced a team-high two RBIs.
  • Jackson tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits over seven innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon scored first for the fourth consecutive game.
  • Eight of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit. Junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) was the only Golden Knight without a hit, but he walked twice.
  • Jackson recorded his first career shutout while setting a career-high in strikeouts.
  • Gannon posted its first shutout since a 6-0 blanking of Wheeling Jesuit at the Russ-Matt Invitational on March 4, 2015.
  • The Golden Knights recorded their largest shutout victory since winning at Salem International 13-0 on April 8, 2014.
  • Gannon reached double digits in hits during four consecutive games for the first time since performing the feat in five straight contests March 18-25, 2012.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon struck first again in the nightcap, scoring twice during the bottom of the third inning. Roach led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt freshman John Davis (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley). He then scored the game's first run on Wiesen's RBI double to left field. Beer later drove Wiesen home with a two-out triple to right field.
  • Cleary chipped away with a run during the top of the fourth inning and tied the contest in the sixth inning.
  • Gannon immediately responded with the game-winning run during the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on Cox's sacrifice bunt and scored on Vargo's triple to center field.
  • Junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) allowed a lead-off single to his first batter in the top of the seventh inning, but then retired the next three hitters to record the save.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Wiesen went 2-for-2 with one run, one RBI and one stolen base in the lead-off role.
  • Five different Golden Knights recorded one hit each.
  • Sophomore David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) tossed six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out seven and walked three.
  • DiPaolo recorded his first career save with his second scoreless inning of relief this season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has scored first during all six games this season.
  • Wiesen has recorded a team-high five multiple-hit games during the first six contests.
  • Both Roach and Wiesen extended their hitting streaks to five games.
  • Cricks' seven strikeouts represented a career-high.
  • Gannon is off to its best six-game start since opening the 2012 campaign with a 4-2 record.
