GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon grabbed the initial momentum during the first quarter. Tied at seven, a three-pointer by sophomore McKenna Shives (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) ignited a 7-0 blitz. Senior Jennie Thies (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) followed with consecutive offensive rebound put-backs to give the Lady Knights a 14-7 edge with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter.
  • A Miki Glenn jumper at the buzzer cut the Cal deficit to 17-11 after one frame.
  • The Gannon advantage remained at six points (23-17), before Cal made its first move of the evening. An 8-1 run gave the Vulcans a 25-24 edge midway through the second quarter.
  • Gannon quickly regained the lead on its next possession after Thies converted a lay-up. The basket started a mini 8-2 rally. Shives capped the run with a pair of triples, giving the Lady Knights a 32-27 edge with 2:37 left in the first half.
  • Cal then held Gannon scoreless the rest of the way while scoring seven points to assume a 34-32 lead at the break.
  • The third quarter featured five ties during the first five minutes and 30 seconds.
  • Tied at 43, Cal grabbed a lead it would never relinquish with six consecutive points.
  • The Cal lead grew to 52-45, before junior Brianna Brennan (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) and Thies scored during the final 42 seconds of the third quarter on lay-ups. The late flurry cut the deficit to 52-49 after three stanzas.
  • Cal opened the final quarter with seven of the first nine points, opening a 59-51 lead 1:22 into the frame.
  • Gannon climbed within one or two possessions on five different occasions during the rest of the game, but was unable to get closer than three points.
  • The Lady Knights clawed within four points twice during the final 28 seconds on three-pointers from Shives, but the Vulcans countered with free throws both times to eventually secure an 83-78 victory.
