GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the first four minutes were played on even terms, Gannon generated the first run of the evening with seven consecutive points to extend an 8-7 lead to an eight-point advantage. The final six points came on a three-pointer from Kuteyi and old-fashion three-point play from senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy).
  • California (Pa.) later countered with six straight points that pulled the Vulcans within 17-16 midway through the first half.
  • Gannon punched back with a pair of bombs from Dogan to push the lead back to 23-16 with 7:32 remaining in the first half.
  • The Gannon lead reached eight points on two more occasions, before Cal rallied to the tie the game. Trailing 29-21, the Vulcans netted six consecutive points to climb within two points.
  • The two clubs then forged deadlocks at 31 and 33. Cal's Daniel Sapp scored on a lay-up at the buzzer to create the fifth tie of the first half as the squads went to the intermission knotted at 35.
  • The first nine minutes of the second half were tight. The final 11 minutes belonged to Gannon. Leading 52-49, the Golden Knights ripped off seven consecutive points to extend their lead into double digits. Kuteyi sandwiched a lay-up by sophomore Isaiah Eisendorf (Los Angeles, Calif./Springbrook, Md.) between a jumper and three-pointer for a 59-49 lead at the 10:52 mark.
  • The closest Cal could get the rest of the way was 61-55 with 8:57 to play. However, Gannon followed with a Dogan jumper and Kuteyi triple that gave the Golden Knights a double-digit lead they would never relinquish.
  • Another 7-0 blitz gave Gannon its biggest lead of the evening at 75-58 with 3:22 to play.
  • California (Pa.) managed to score the last eight points during the final 1:41 to make for a respectable 77-68 final score.
