Gannon Men's Basketball Team's Win Streak Snapped by Seton Hill Buzzer Beater

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Seton Hill 59, Gannon 57
  • Records: Gannon (6-16, 5-14 PSAC), Seton Hill (10-12, 8-10 PSAC)
  • Location: Greensburg, Pa. - McKenna Center
  • The Short Story: Kameron Taylor's three-pointer from the top of the arc with 0.6 second left catapulted the Seton Hill men's basketball team to a 59-57 victory against Gannon Wednesday night at the McKenna Center. It was the second time this season that a three-point buzzer beater defeated the Golden Knights on the road after California (Pa.) did the same in a 56-54 win on January 13.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon fell behind early for the second consecutive game after Seton Hill scored 13 of the contest's first 19 points.
  • The home squad held a seven-point lead on three different occasions, before the Golden Knights rolled off seven consecutive points to tie the contest at 18 with 8:04 left in the first half. The run consisted of a three-pointer by freshman C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./St. Thomas More) sandwiched by a pair of baskets from senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy).
  • As quick as Gannon tied the game, Seton Hill pulled away again with a 10-0 blitz. Trevor Blondin's three-pointer capped the streak, giving the Griffins a 28-18 advantage at the 4:46 mark.
  • The runs didn't stop as Gannon countered with the next seven points. Freshman Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn./St. Thomas More) started this run with a three-pointer and ended it with a lay-up, pulling the Golden Knights within 30-27.
  • Seton Hill added one more field goal, before going to halftime with a 32-27 edge.
  • Only one true run was generated by either team during the second half. Trailing 40-34, junior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) converted a lay-up and drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point midway through the second half.
  • Neither team was able to create a lead larger than three points during the final 10 minutes that featured six lead changes and six ties.
  • Gannon grabbed the lead back for the final time when Toupane hit a tough jumper inside the paint with 1:55 remaining.
  • After both teams came up empty on possessions, Seton Hill had the ball with the shot clock off. Unable to get a clean look, Taylor took a contested three-pointer from the top of the arc and found nothing but net as the horn sounded.
  • The officials put 0.6 second back on the clock, but Gannon's heave down court from the baseline was intercepted to clinch the Seton Hill victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Dogan was Gannon's leading scorer for the second time this season with a career-high 17 points, seven rebounds and a career-high three steals in 23 minutes off the bench. He finished 7-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from three-point range.
  • Toupane and Gardener added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Junior Emmanuel Matey (Lanham, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) and Toupane matched career-highs in steals with three each.
  • Gannon shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field, 53.8 percent (7-13) from three-point range and 50 percent (4-8) from the free throw line.
  • Spencer Casson was the spark plug for Seton Hill with 11 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
  • Blondin and Taylor scored 16 and 12 points, respectively. The duo along with Brandon Alston played all 40 minutes.
  • Seton Hill shot 38.6 percent (22-57) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8-26) from behind the arc and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon won the battle of the benches by a 28-3 score.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon dropped to 1-9 on the road this season, suffering five of those setbacks by single digits.
  • The Golden Knights were swept by the Griffins for the first time since Seton Hill joined the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) prior to the 2013-14 academic year.
  • Toupane reached double digits in scoring for the sixth straight game and 17th time this season.
  • Gannon played its eighth game of the season decided by five points or less, holding a 4-4 record in those contests.
  • The Golden Knights shot 50 percent or better from three-point range for the third time this season.
  • Gannon's four free throws represented its fewest made in a game since going 4-of-8 from the line against Charleston at the Waco Center Classic on November 15, 2014.
  • The Golden Knights' 11 steals were their most since having 11 at Pitt-Johnstown on January 14, 2015.
  • Gannon created 10 steals during its previous game at Pitt-Johnstown, giving it double-digit steals in consecutive contests for the first time since performing the feat in three straight games February 15-22, 2012.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes a three-game road swing Saturday, February 13 at Le Moyne.
  • Game time for the last non-conference contest of the season is scheduled for 12 noon.
  • The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the 90.5 WERG online stream at www.wergfm.com.
  • Gannon is looking for the season sweep of the Dolphins after a 58-56 victory during the Gary Miller Classic semifinals on November 27.
  • The Golden Knights have won the last two encounters with Le Moyne to assume a 31-17 lead in the all-time series.
  • Gannon has won two straight at Le Moyne's Henninger Athletic Center, but the squad is only 10-11 all-time on the Dolphins' home floor.
  • The Golden Knights posted a 70-49 victory last season at the Henninger Athletic Center.
