THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Gannon 81, Bowie State 67
  • Records: Gannon (5-2), Bowie State (3-5)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Hammermill Center (Gary Miller Court)
  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team used the same recipe of sharp shooting and strong defense during the second half for the second consecutive game and broke open a tight contest en route to an 81-67 victory against Bowie State Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center. The decision extended the Golden Knights' win streak to three games.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon raced out to an early lead for the third consecutive game, using a 15-5 run to assume a 20-9 advantage seven minutes into the contest. Senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) tallied seven points, including a three-pointer that capped the run. Junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and sophomore Evan Phoenix (Stevensville, Md./Calvert Hall) added four points each.
  • Bowie State slowly chipped away at the lead, before generating a 9-0 run that gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the evening at 35-32 with 3:16 showing on the clock.
  • Trailing 42-39, sophomore Michael Haysbert (Randallstown, Md./Western School of Technology and Environmental Science) came up with a big play to forge a halftime deadlock. Haysbert buried a jumper from the right baseline while being fouled with 0.6 second left. His ensuing free throw sent the teams to the locker room tied at 42.
  • Gannon then dominated the second half for the second consecutive game. A tip-in by Miraud followed by a three-pointer from freshman Jimmy Berger (Medina, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) gave the Golden Knights a 49-43 lead during the opening minutes.
  • Minutes later, eight consecutive points pushed the Gannon lead into double digits. An old-fashion three-point play and long-range bomb from junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) extended the home team's advantage to 61-46 with 13:25 remaining.
  • Gannon grabbed its biggest lead of the evening at 75-53 following Haysbert's jumper at the 6:14 mark.
  • Bowie State eventually scored the final four points during the last 45 seconds to account for the final 81-67 score.

  • Dogan led all scorers on both sides for the second consecutive game with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He went 8-of-15 from the field.
  • One game after falling one point shy of a double-double, Miraud came up one rebound shy with a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds. He finished 8-of-11 in field goal attempts.
  • Phoenix also narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • Jackson added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • Berger produced a point-guard line of seven assists and only one turnover in 38 minutes.

  • The Golden Knights have produced a 120-54 edge in points in the paint during the last three games.
  • Gannon dished out at least 20 assists in three consecutive games for the first time since December 9-29, 2011.

  • The Golden Knights scored at least 80 points for the fourth time in seven games after doing so only three times during the entire 2015-16 campaign.
  • Gannon has grabbed at least 11 offensive rebounds during all seven games, marking its longest streak since performing the feat nine straight times December 10, 2011-January 21, 2012.
  • Bowie State continued a brutal non-conference schedule that included road games at No. 4 Fairmont State (L 100-97), No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) (80-67) and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) finalist West Chester (94-92).
  • Gannon held Bowie State 13 points before its scoring average.
