Saunders Posts Double-Double; Lady Knights Fall to Tough Indiana (Pa.) Squad, 71-48

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Gannon Lady Knights, 71-48, on Friday night at the Kovalchick Complex in Indiana, Pa.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks jumped to an early 18-6 advantage before Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering), Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) combined on a 6-0 Lady Knight run to get within 18-12.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) ended the scoring in the first quarter with a layup; Gannon trailing the Crimson Hawks, 21-14.
  • The Lady Knights kept the deficit in check in the second quarter. Saunders hit a jumper and Marissa Siebka (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) added a free throw  at the 3:01 mark of the quarter to pull within 30-23.
  • Indiana (Pa.) went to the half with only a nine-point lead, 34-25.
  • Gannon pulled to within seven points, twice in the third quarter on the back of two Saunders' buckets. The Lady Knights down just 36-29 at the 7:53 mark of the quarter.
  • IUP went on a 19-5 run to finish the third quarter, extending their lead to 55-34.
  • The Lady Knights played level with Crimson Hawks in the fourth quarter. LaCava began the period with layup off a Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) pass.
  • Saunders backed that up with another bucket at the 8:14 mark of the period. Gannon trailed 55-38.
  • Indiana (Pa.) went on a mini 12-4 run midway through the fourth quarter to put the lead at 25 with 4:24 remaining, 67-42.
  • The Lady Knights finished the final four minutes with a slight 6-4 advantage.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Saunders posted a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) added nine points and four rebounds.
  • Gannon shot 40 percent from the field (20-50) and 25 percent from behind the arc (2-8).
  • Rourke had career-highs in assists (5) and blocks (4).
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Saunders recorded her sixth double-double of the season.
  • Gannon has the second-toughest remaining schedule in the country. Future opponents are a combined 63-29 (.685).
  • Indiana (Pa.) has the eighth-toughest remaining schedule in the country. Future opponents are a combined 62-34 (.646).
  • The Crimson Hawks tout the conference's best scoring defense, allowing just 52.2 points per game. That figure ranks sixth nationally.
