Balanced Scoring and Double-Doubles Lead Gannon Men's Basketball Team Past Lock Haven (Video)

  • The Short Story: All five starters reached double digits in scoring while junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) and senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) posted double-doubles as the Gannon men's basketball team earned an 81-70 victory against Lock Haven Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover match-up at the Hammermill Center.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holding a one-point lead, Gannon scored 13 consecutive points midway through the first half to grab a 23-9 advantage with 8:26 showing on the clock. The defensive unit held the Bald Eagles without a point for six minutes and 13 seconds. The visitors went without a field goal for seven minutes and 49 seconds.
  • Five different Golden Knights scored during the run. Junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) and sophomore Evan Phoenix (Stevensville, Md./Calvert Hall) netted four points each.
  • A 7-0 blitz later in the half gave Gannon its biggest lead of the afternoon at 32-15 with 3:47 left in the first stanza. It was another balanced run with Phoenix, Jackson and Miraud producing the points.
  • Lock Haven managed a strong final push by scoring 11 of the final 14 points, cutting the deficit to 35-26 at the break.
  • The Bald Eagles clawed within four points twice during the opening five minutes of the second half at 35-31 and 38-34.
  • Gannon responded the second time with back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Jimmy Berger (Medina, Ohio/Saint Ignatius) that pushed the lead back into double digits (46-36) at the 14:37 mark.
  • Lock Haven cut the deficit to single digits eight times during the final 14:22, but Gannon pushed its lead back into double digits every time. The Golden Knights' lead hovered between six and 12 points for the final 15 minutes and 29 seconds.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's game was the opener of a PSAC crossover home weekend.
  • All five Gannon starters reached double digits in scoring.
  • Miraud led the way with his first career double-double, posting career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (12). He made seven of nine shot attempts.
  • Dogan recorded his second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, including a 9-of-10 showing from the free throw line.
  • Phoenix followed with 17 points and seven rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting.
  • Berger and Jackson chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Gannon shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-16) from three-point range and 71.4 percent (20-28) from the free throw line. 
  • Ra'eese Hunt topped the Lock Haven scoring chart with 22 points and six rebounds.
  • Amir Hinton came off the bench to score 20 points.
  • Jihad Barnes completed the Bald Eagles' trio of double-digit scorers with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Lock Haven shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the floor, 42.9 percent (6-14) from behind the arc and 71.4 percent (20-28) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon out-rebounded Lock Haven 44-27, including a 14-2 edge on the offensive glass which led to a 22-2 difference in second-chance points.
  • The Golden Knights also posted a 40-20 scoring advantage in the paint.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon improved to 47-14 in its next home game after a home loss during the last 17 seasons.
  • The Golden Knights remained perfect in 18 all-time meetings against the Bald Eagles at the Hammermill Center, increasing their lead in the overall series to 25-1.
  • Lock Haven's three-game win streak came to an end.
  • Gannon has out-rebounded all five opponents this season.
  • The Golden Knights have produced a 28-5 edge in offensive rebounds during the last two games.
  • Gannon had two double-doubles in the same game for the first time since Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) and Tony Boykins (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) performed the feat during a 71-56 victory against Clarion on February 3 at the Hammermill Center.
  • All five starters reached double digits in scoring for the first time since an 88-64 victory against Mansfield at the Hammermill Center on January 5, 2013.
  • Berger scored 11 points during the first four games, before generating a season-high 12 against Lock Haven.
  • Gannon's 21 assists were its most since having 22 during an 80-67 win against Mansfield at the 'Mill on January 6.
  • The Golden Knights had at least nine more assists than turnovers for the first time since recording 21 assists compared to eight turnovers during an 86-63 victory at Edinboro on January 16, 2013.
  • Gannon has reached the 80-point plateau three times during the first five games after doing so three times during the entire 2015-16 campaign.
  • Lock Haven's two offensive rebounds were the fewest by a Gannon opponent since Seton Hill had two during a 53-51 Golden Knight road victory on January 24, 2015.
