  • The Short Story: The No. 6-ranked Virginia Union Panthers used a strong first quarter to pull away from the Gannon Lady Knights on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Hammermill Center. Virginia Union defeated Gannon, 84-55.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia Union used an 18-0 run in the first quarter to pull out to a 23-2 lead after the first quarter.
  • Elise Torrence (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) broke the Panther run by converting two free throws at the 8:37 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Lady Knights had a mini 8-3 in a two-minute span of the second quarter. The run included three-pointers from Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).
  • Gannon went to the half trailing 39-13.
  • Marissa Siebka (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) got the scoring going in the third period with a triple. Siebka buried three treys and had 10 points in the game.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) connected on three-pointer at the 6:41 mark of the third quarter. LaCava pulled the Lady Knights to within 47-19.
  • Gannon trailed Virginia Union 46-28 after the third quarter.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) kicked off a 27-point Lady Knight fourth quarter with a lay-up. Siebka continued the scoring with a trip to the free-throw line, converting on one of the two shots. Gannon trailed 67-30 with 7:35.
  • The Lady Knights finished the final 4:02 of the game on a 16-7 run. Siebka, Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) and Rourke all hit threes in the final minute.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Rourke recorded a team-high 16 points on six-of-eight from the field.
  • Gannon shot 19-of-54 (.352) as a team and 10-of-28 (.357) from three-point range.
  • Gannon's bench outscored the Panthers 36-30. It was the second time this season the Lady Knights outscored the opposition's bench.
  • The Lady Knights had their two-game win streak snapped against the Panthers.
  • GU hit 15-of-29 (.517) from the field in the second half.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Virginia Union is ranked No. 6 in the latest WBCA top 25 rankings released on Dec. 13.
  • Rourke set career-highs in points (16), field goals made (6), and three-point field goals made (4).
  • Siebka tied a career-high with 10 points. She previously hit 10 against West Chester on Nov. 19.
  • The Lady Knights' 36 points from the bench was the most this season.
  • The Lady Knights hit 10+ three-pointers in back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 20 and Nov. 23, 2013.
