The Gannon University Volleyball team hosted the Cheyney Wolves on Friday night and made quick work of the visitors with a 3-0 sweep. The Lady Knights won, 25-11, 25-10, 25-11.
Cheyney saw its largest lead of the first set, up 3-1. That's when Gannon went on an 8-2 run, capped by an
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) service ace to put the Lady Knights up 9-5. Gannon scored the last seven points of the set and won 25-11.
Set two saw the Gannon Lady Knights run away with a 25-10 win. Gannon scored eight of the last 10 points in the set, including four
Ally Smith (Penfield, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) kills.
The third and final set saw a 10-4 run by Gannon at the start and featured two kills from
Anne-Mari Kaur (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Lillekula Upper Secondary School) and
Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Gannon went on to win the set, 25-11.
Junior
Maggie Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) tallied a career high seven kills and four digs. She also had an outstanding .700 hitting percentage. Wilhelm made her third start of the season against the Wolves.
Freshman
Toni Leitshuh (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) scored career-highs in kills (12), points (14.5) and service aces (2).
Lisa Gropler (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) also had career-most 32 assists in the match.
Gannon improves to 23-3 overall and 12-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Cheyney dips to 3-20 on the season, 0-14 in the conference.
The Lady Knights have now run their all-time record to 9-0 against the Wolves.
Gannon will return to action on Saturday at home against the West Chester at 2 p.m. The match will be Gannon's senior day. Gannon is undefeated against West Chester in 12 lifetime match-ups. The Golden Rams are 18-8 overall and 6-7 in the conference.
