Saunders Records Third Double-Double of Season; Gannon Falls Short at Findlay, 56-47

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Findlay 56, Gannon 47

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights mounted a fourth-quarter comeback but ran out of time as Findlay escaped with 56-47 victory on Sunday, Nov. 27, in Findlay, Ohio.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) got the scoring started at the 8:56 mark of the first quarter as she cruised through the lane for a layup to give the Lady Knights a 2-0 lead.
  • Gannon extended its lead to three at 8-5 with a Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) layup with 4:14 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Findlay went on a 9-2 run in the final four minutes to win the quarter, 14-10.
  • A Christa Puthoff basket at the beginning of the second quarter extended the Oilers lead to 16-10.
  • Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) made a basket and was fouled with 7:24 remaining in the half; she converted the free throw for a three-point play. Gannon pulled to within three at 16-13.
  • Gannon took the lead back with a Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) three-pointer at the 1:50 mark of the second quarter. Gannon led 24-22 and went to the locker room up two at halftime.
  • It was Gannon's second halftime lead of the season. The Lady Knights led 35-31 against West Chester at the half.
  • Findlay pulled ahead in the third quarter as the Oilers outscored the Lady Knights 17-6 in the period and led 39-30 at the end of three quarters.
  • The Lady Knights tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Junior Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) connected on a jumper to pull the Lady Knights within seven to begin the final period.
  • Findlay opened up the lead to 13 points, 45-32, with a Lynsey Englebrecht three-pointer at the 8:15 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Knights then went on an 11-2 run, capped off with a Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) free throw with 3:19 remaining. Gannon pulled to within four points at 47-43.
  • That was as close as Gannon go, however. The Oilers went on to win, 56-47
     
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) scored a career-high eight points in the loss.
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) tallied a career-high five blocks in the contest. She's the first Lady Knight with five blocks in a game since Jen Papich did it against Edinboro on March 15, 2014.
  • Gannon held Findlay's Karli Bonar to just 1-8 from behind the arc. Bonar is second in Oilers' history with 218 career 3-pointers.
  • The Oilers only shot 30% (6-20) from three-point range. Findlay came into the game as the top three-point shooting team in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Mitchell recorded her seventh-straight contest of double-digit scoring. She posted a team-high 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Saunders posted her team-leading third double-double of the season. She scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Oilers.
  • Findlay snapped its four-game losing streak against the Lady Knights with the 56-47 victory over Gannon on Sunday.
  • The Lady Knights have won 11 of their last 13 games against the Oilers.
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home to face-off against Lock Haven on Saturday, Dec. 3.
  • The game is slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
  • The Lady Knights lead the all-time series, 16-7.
